BMW 5 Series GT Might Get New Generation In 2016
|   Wednesday, February 25, 2015
The BMW 5 Series GT might get a new generation in 2016, according to the Germans from Auto Motor und Sport. According to the sources within BMW quoted by the Germans, the sales volumes achieved by the 5 Series GT in the USA and China have made the company executives from Munich to want a successor.

The new generation would be presented in 2016 and would use the platform of the next generation 5 Series. Because of this the model will have a four- and six-cylinder in-line engine along with a plug-in hybrid variant with a range of about 30 kilometers.
In addition, the future model will have a body with increased torsional rigidity and a lower weight. The weight of the new 5 Series GT will be about 100 kilograms less than the current generation.

With the new generation 5 Series GT we would have a completely new platform, different in terms of philosophy, compared to what is currently used. However, its function will not be affected. In other words, the model will keep the double opening trunk and increased the wheelbase compared to the 5 Series version, although the body will have a length closest to the 5 Series sedan range rather than the current model.

The analysts at IHS Automotive mentioned that the 5 Series GT complements the German manufacturer's range not through special sales volumes but with the presence of an alternative to the sedan, coupe and touring bodyworks from its own portfolio of high class models.

The largest global market for BMW 5 Series GT it is the Chinese market, followed by the one in the USA. The good results from China and USA were obtained by this model in 2013 and 2014. This situation happened even though for the preceding year figures are not yet broken down into 5 Series versions. Therefore, we don't really have accurate data in terms of individual sales volume.

We do know that the Chinese market acquired 42 percent of all 5 Series GT units sold in 2013, while Europe has acquired 29 percent of the production share. The USA market acquired 10 percent from the total 5 GT sold 2 years ago, but this percentage means greater volumes than the European market, because we are talking about the second car market in the world in terms of volume in both 2013 and in 2014. At the level of 5 Series range, the GT variant scored 5.7 percent of the total 370,930 units sold in 2013.

Even though sales made by the GT version are only a small part of the total BMW 5 Series success story, this version is still a money machine for BMW. Also, as a result of this, IHS also believes that there will be a second generation for this release.

"The 5 Series range as a whole is stronger for having this product, and it's very likely that the company's profit margin is higher on the GT, even with the cost of some dedicated sheetmetal and tooling," declared Stephanie Brinley, IHS senior analyst.
