BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, The Second Four-Door Coupe In The Bavarian's Portfolio
|   Saturday, February 15, 2014
The BMW Series 4 Gran Coupe completes a new family of sporty models grouped under the 4 Series title, becoming the second four-door coupe in the Bavarian manufacturer's prortfolio. Its only direct rival is the Audi A5.

With a length of 4.63 m, a width of 1.82 m, and a 2.81 m wheelbase, its sizes are identical to those of the Series 4 Coupe, but has a height greater by 12 mm, and a 112 millimeters longer roof, which presents a new silhouette in the BMW portfolio, without forgetting the characteristics that became classics to the Bavarian brand, such as the "Hofmeister kink" the famous curvature, marked by the C pillar toward the side windows.

Compared to the 3 Series, the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is longer by 14 cm and 40 mm lower. The trunk also increased its capacity by 35 liters and has a useful volume between 480 and 1,300 liters, excellent values for a coupe.

Even more interesting is that the new model comes with an electric tailgate opening, frameless glass doors and folding seats. Optionally, it provides the Smart Opener, an automatic tailgate opening by the mere moving of the foot in the right sensor hidden under the rear bumper. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe seems to solve this way the eternal dilemma of form versus function, successfully weaving the 4 Series appeal of two doors, the versatility of the 3 Series Touring and the sedan attire.

The new BMW Series 4 Gran Coupe can be customized down to the smallest detail. In addition to the classic lines of equipment, Modern Line, Luxury Line and Sport Line, the customers can benefit from the M package, and special individual programs that broadens the horizon of options with four exclusive colors for bodywork leather and special wood finishes as well as a dedicated rims model, 19 inches in diameter. Optional full LED headlights are offered, plus head-up display.

The engine range of 4 Series Gran Coupe is composed of five units, three petrol and two diesels. They offer between 143 hp and 306 hp and are available either with the six-speed manual transmission or the automatic transmission eight-speed Steptronic. In any case, there are two drive options, namely the 428i xDrive and 420d xDrive. The fastest BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.5 seconds, while the entry-level model achieves that sprint in 9.2 seconds.

The top range, 435i xDrive, has an average consumption of 8.1 liters per 100 km, with the six-speed manual transmission. This model is the least economical of the range, while the most efficient motorization is the 418d, which has an average consumption of 4.5 liters per 100 km, regardless of the transmission choice. All the engines on offer comply with Euro 6 standards.

At the onset, only the 428i and 420d versions can be ordered. Starting this summer, however, it will have four-wheel drive, and the 420iA and 435i models, and the range of engines will be extended by two diesels, with a six-cylinder configuration: 430D, with 258 hp and 435d making 313 hp.
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will debut next month in Geneva, and the first orders will be honored in the summer.
