BMW 2 Series Coupe Gets A More Efficient Diesel Engine
|   Tuesday, September 23, 2014
Lighter, stronger, more efficientand more comfortable - this is the new four-cylinder dieselengine equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
The latest generation of four-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW portfolio offers optimized efficiency and many more qualities that meet the principles of BMW EfficientDynamics. Compared to the previous engine, the BMW 220d Coupe's propeller sees an increase in power of about 5 kW and a maximum torque that is 20 Nm greater.
Moreover, the new engine mass decreased by about two kg. Developments were recorded in terms of acoustic comfort and the Auto Start Stop functionbehavior.

The most important qualities of the new four-cylinder diesel engine are the aluminum crankcase, integrated balancer shafts for improved thermodynamic oil pump control program, and an optimized efficiency turbocharger with variable intake geometry. Also the optimized direct injection common-rail injector has a solenoid valve which ensures very precise supply of fuel at a maximum injection pressure of 2,000 bars.

The new generation of four-cylinder BMW 220d Coupe coincides with the introduction of a new six-speed manual transmission and an optional transmission, the eight-speed Steptronic. Both are aligned with the performance characteristics of the propeller. The new manual transmission of the BMW 220d Coupe model provides power control over the entire range of engine revs, so the acceleration characteristics of the car and comfort gear shifting performance areoptimized.

In combination with the two transmissionvariants, the increases in power and torque developed by the new engine have a positive effect on performance, and acceleration of BMW 220d Coupe. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h was improved by 0.1 seconds - to 7.1 seconds (six-speed manual transmission) or 7.0 seconds (eight-speed Steptronic transmission).

Equipped with the latest generation of engines the BMW 2 Series Coupe offers an incomparable combination of sportiness and efficiency. All of this is possible thanks to the new powerplant found under the BMW 220d hood. Also, it should be noted that all that is possible in the context in which CO2 emissions are just 99 g / km.
The 2.0 liter diesel engine is part of the new family of engines in the BMW Group. It features the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technologyversion, achieving a maximum output of 140 kW / 190 hp, while providing maximum torque of 400 Nm.

On the BMW 220d Coupe, the engine is combined with the new transmission development. As a consequence with the standard six-speed manual transmission, the two-door car get an average consumption of 4.4 l to 4.1 l / 100 km and a CO2 emission level of 115 g - 107 g / km.

In combination with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, the corresponding levels are 4.1 l to 3.8 l / 100 km, respectively, from 107 g to 99 g / km (given in the EU test cycle depending on tire size). All this equates to a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 0.4 l / 100 km, and CO2 emissions by up to 12 g / km.
