Audi's Q2 SUV To Be Launched In 2015
|   Sunday, June 17, 2012
The upcoming Paris Auto Show will be where the public will see Audi's concept for a new crossover that will be called the Q2. Don't expect anything too luxurious from it, as the car aims at the entry-level segment.

The planned date at which customers can get their hands on it is somewhere in 2015. If the current thinking suffers no change, the Q2 will stand below the Q3. It aims to compete with the Mini Countryman. For that reason it will feature raised seating, a high quality interior, svelte exterior styling and a range of 4 cylinder engines for both diesel and gasoline lovers.

The Q2 will be based on Volkswagen Group's new MQB platform, which has just launched under the 3rd generation A3 and will also underpin a new Q3 in 2017. Also, it is one of the 4 new SUVs that will complete Audi's current 3 model lineup.

The wheelbase will be around 2500 mm, with a width that is said to compare with that of the Q3, roughly 1570 mm in the front and 1575 mm in the back. Overall, the car will be 4150 mm long, making it 200 mm longer than the A1.

The rumor market says the sizes take inspiration from the upcoming A2 hatch proportions in order to have better economies of scale. Similarly, another of VW's cars, the Skoda Yeti will use the same underpinnings when it comes out in 2015.

According to Autocar, the stylish of the Q2 is inspired heavily by the 2010 Quattro concept, especially around the front and rear ends. Elements from the CrossCoupé study performed by VW can also be found.

In September, at the Paris Auto Show, we will see a Q2 in a 3 door version due to added sporty look. If we are not mistaken, the same approach was taken when the A1 first debuted. But when the time comes for the production version to be exposed in 2015 at the Frankfurt Auto Show we will have a traditional vehicle with 5 doors. Of course, a lot can happen in 3 years.

Engine choices are as follows: 2 gasoline and 3 diesel powered units will be offered, all of which will use 4 cylinders. The former category will use the 1.4 liter EA211 at 120 and 170 horsepower, and the diesel family will use a 1.6 liter EA827 rated at 110 horses, and 2.0 liter EA288 going at 150 and 180 horsepower. Of course, at this stage everything is just speculation; a final decision in this regard will have to wait a few more months.

A performance-orientated Q2 S with a 225 horsepower version, originating from a 2.0 liter turbo EA888 engine is also planned. All engines will be paired with a 6 speed manual transmission, with the option of fitting a 7 speed dual-clutch gearbox. Also, 2 and 4 wheel traction cannot be forgotten, seeing this is a crossover we are talking about.
More to come about this model (hopefully), when the Paris Auto Show starts.
