Audi working an all new Predictive Efficiency Assistance system

Audi is currently working on a new technology that they call a coasting hybrid. The general idea is to insert an electric motor along with a petrol engine which enables the vehicle to switch the engine on and off frequently during the course of a journey. This helps maintain fuel efficiency and Audi has achieved quite a few marvelous results on course to creating this new technology.

Stop Start is a familiar technology used in most modern vehicles but with this new technology – called iHEV – Audi plans to save more fuel by depending on gravitational pulls during the course of a journey.

This new technology is set to b used in the Audi A7 and the motor uses a non conventional 48 V lithium ion battery in addition to a 48V electric system. The battery is stored in the boot and is strapped on to an electric self starter motor. This system helps the engine back to life during the course of travel and hence the vehicle saves a lot of fuel in the way.

The iHEV works in accordance to Audi's effective Predictive Efficiency Assistance system and pre loaded software will help the system keep track of the progress of the vehicle. This system will also keep track of the local speed limits of different roads as well as the gradient level of the tracks.
For example, the Predictive Efficiency Assistance can calculate the amount of gradient on the road surface and hence calculate the specific time limit for which the engine can be switched off and the opportune moment at which it should be turned back on.

The Predictive Efficiency Assistance also decides the correct speed the vehicle should be travelling at and as a result, the system acts like a co driver at all times hence reducing the chances of an accident.

The Predictive Efficiency Assistance actually controls the car in a number of ways and even during high speed cruising. It is like a stability control unit, but it just controls the vehicle by a greater margin. Keeping in mind the speedway speed limit, iHEV could easily stall the engine for close to a kilo meter and save fuel in the process.

Audi claims that the iHEV proto type travelled a distance of 38 kilometers and the engine was stalled for close to 28 percent of the entire distance. This test was carried out on the freeway and this figure will reduce by a considerable margin inside the city perimeters where the need for constant braking arises.

Official test figures revealed that fuel efficiency was increased by 10 percent while the journey time was increased by 2 – 3 minutes in general. The ride quality on the Predictive Efficiency Assistance enabled A7 was incredible and the engine performance has improved by a certain margin making the ride quite smooth.

Overall, this technology is a thing of the future and Audi plans on introducing this on most of its future vehicles. As of now, tests are on and Audi is hopeful of a near future launch.
