Audi Will Not Build Pick-Up But Could Launch Q5 And Q7 RS Variants
|   Sunday, May 17, 2015
Audi will not build a pick-up in the near future, says Marc Lichte, head of the German brand's design department. The Ingolstadt manufacturer is in line with those from BMW regarding the decision do not enter into the premium segment of commercial vehicles with picku-ps, unlike the rivals from Mercedes-Benz, which confirmed the launch of a pick-up in the near future.

Both BMW and Audi motivate that launching a pick-up is incompatible with the stylistic language of the companies and with the future intentions of the brands.
Marc Lichte, Audi head of design, has not definitively ruled out the possibility of a pick-up bearing the Audi logo, but said in an interview for Australians from Car Advice that the launch of such a model will not take place until the end of this decade.

Audi head of design Marc Lichte declared that it would be "difficult" to apply his new design language to such a vehicle. "Maybe not in the close future," Lichte responded when he was asked if he could envision an Audi pick-up. "Maybe, but not today." All this time his latest creation, the Audi Prologue Allroad concept throned majestically at the Shangai Motor Show.

The Australians' question regarding a pick-up from Audi came naturally after rivals from Mercedes-Benz decided to seek partners from Nissan in order to take over the Navara platform, all to develop a premium pick-up, just like the Renault Kangoo became the Mercedes Citan. It is true that this utility vehicle does not have much success, both because of the too high price for the rather weak quality, but Mercedes-Benz customers do not want such vehicles.

In contrast to those from BMW, which does not have in their group a pick-up platform, the Volkswagen Group, to which Audi also belongs, is offering the Volkswagen Amarok pick-up. Asked if he tried to draw an Audi pick-up on the Amarok platform Marc Lichte denied this hypothesis, stating that the Volkswagen Amarok fits perfectly into the portfolio of the corporation as it is, with the Volkswagen logo no longer having need of an Audi companion, or another brand.

Meanwhile, the Audi range will be expanding its portfolio of RS models, in the form of Q5 and Q7's sports variants. The news comes from Michael Berchtold, project manager for the Audi RS3 Sportback, which declared for the Australians from Car Advice that the performance versions of the two SUVs on offer would actually be feasible. Even with this statement, the onset of the two RS models is not set in stone, since both versions require final approval for production version development, so things are still unconfirmed by the official quoted by the Australians.

So, are pick-ups the next trend in automotive industry after the explosive growth of SUVs and crossovers today? As evidence of this we can serve Mercedes-Benz's intention to build the first premium pick-up in history, whose appearance on the market could take place in 2018-2020.
