Audi TT offroad concept could become reality in 2017

The Audi TT offroad concept will go into production in 2017. The British press says that the decision has already been taken and the name of the future Audi model range is TTQ.

The Audi TT offroad concept was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, announcing a possible crossover version of the German manufacturer's sport model range. According to the British media, the decision to move from concept to series model was already taken and we will see the new Audi in 2017.

Normally, the new crossover should have been named Audi Q4, but the model name is owned by Alfa Romeo, together with the names Q2, and despite efforts from those of Audi to purchase them from the FCA group the offer was refused. Thus, Audi will refocus on the TTQ name and the new crossover will become part of the TT model family.

"We have no choice but to make a virtue out of necessity. By taking the TTQ route, we avoid the confrontation with Fiat, we don't overcrowd the Q corral, and we add a fresh twist to the TT theme." explained a senior Ingolstadt manager.

The Audi TTQ will have dimensions similar to those of the current Audi Q3; the two models will share the MQB platform. Moreover, they are even related visually, just like the BMW X3 and BMW X4.

The British journalists from Car Magazine say that another two variants of the TT, TT Allroad Shooting Brake and Sportback TT were rejected by officials of and will not get a series version.

The first proposal, which didn't get internal approval, was the TT Allroad presented in Detroit in 2014. This model was thought to be too cramped to be practical. Moreover, the product planning department thought the idea that shooting brake silhouette with a longer rear overhang would only be popular in Europe. This is yet another reason for rejection by Audi officials.

In September 2014 in Paris the TT Sportback was presented. It also was a special concept, more credible, well-proportioned, beautifully detailed and quite different from the A3 to which it is genetically linked. Despite these qualities, the TT Sportback with five doors in real life did not have any chance.

From the get-go, the model is compromised and hampered by very high load step, and a quartet of bonsai doors. Also, there is a major lack of space for passing in the back, difficult egress and regress. Moreover, there was not even enough space for kids when the front seats are pushed back. So, from this point of view, the model did not correspond to consumer demands.

The space offered is the main reason for which the TTQ Offroad won against other TT crossover concepts. It has enough space for head and knee for the rear passengers along with a convenient luggage-sized deck.

The buyers of this crossover want family friendliness and a comfortable driving position. From this point of view, the TTQ will fulfill all requirements, in spite of a roofline 60 mm lower than Q3's.

In terms of the interior, we can expect a classy finish, great ergonomics, subtle touches like the five eyeball trademark vents and Audi's new virtual cabin display.
