Audi to expand lineup to 60 models by end of the decade
|   Sunday, July 27, 2014
If there has been any ambitious plan ever, then this is it. Audi ha 49 models in their lineup till date, and are planning to expand that number to 60 by then end of 2020. Considering the amount of time that goes behind conceiving a design and then for it to materialize, to manufacture 11 cars that will sell in a time span of 6 years or less, starting from scratch is almost as ambitious as Julius Caesar.

While there are some cars already waiting to join production line and start wooing customers as soon as they hit the road, other models are held at conceptual level or even less.
In such a situation for Rupert Stadler, Audi boss, to declare such a plan might seem maniac. However, when Sadler explained how it plans to actually achieve this goal, it sounded fairly practical and achievable also. Now it is going to be a race against the clock.

One of the first cars adding to 49 car lineup of Audi is Q1. This cute little car is all set to make its debut. On a similar line you can expect to see a Q8 releasing sometime before 2020. So that makes two from 11. Stadler has a plan for the rest of them as well, and reveals some of it very secretively.

He casually pointed out the work they did with their A5 derivatives. How they got out coupe, cabriolet and sportback models out of a same base design. Then he pointed out similar potential for its C and D segment cars. This means they are probably going to roll out coupe and cabriolet models, at least, of A6 and A7 as well. It is going to be tough competition for rival S class vehicles with soft tops and coupes as well.

As Rupert Stadler pointed out, their aim is to experiment with their potential, all the while remaining faithful to their loyal young customers. They are trying to have at least one car for all the niches just like every other German automobile manufacturing brand. With their finesse and expertise, they might just have a little upper hand in this case.

They are also going to work on their electric vehicle range. With rising fuel costs and all the concern about fuel economy, purely electric vehicles and plug in hybrids have been selling like hot cake. It is a market to capitalize on at this moment and Audi had been lacking the age slightly when it comes to EV Models.

On this note, Quattro might be making a comeback. There might be two different models of a Sport Quattro, one essentially being a plug in hybrid. They are going to come out with a highly tuned and turbocharged five cylinder engine with a capacity of 2.5 liters as well.

So their attempt is to be adventurous with the adventurous models and play it safe with the other ones. They might just succeed in having 60 models by 2020 if they carry on with the same speed.
