Audi Sport Quattro Concept Arrives With Laser-LED Headlights At The Consumer Electronics Show In Las Vegas
|   Saturday, January 04, 2014
Presented in a world premiere last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Audi Sport Quattro Concept returns to the public eye in Las Vegas at an event dedicated to lovers of the latest technology.

Booked in the first phase of exclusive presentations of gadgets and the latest technological equipment, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event, which takes place in Las Vegas, in recent years was transformed into a interesting showcase for car manufacturers which take advantage of the presence of technology enthusiasts to showcase the latest updates in the field of onboard systems.
As it happens, this year also, when CES will start from January 6, it will unveil some concepts presented in world premiere by the big car manufacturers.

In the case of the Audi, the absolute novelty is actually an improved version of the Sport Quattro Concept, the prototype previously presented last fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Although it is virtually identical inside and outside with the car we saw in Frankfurt the concept revealed in Las Vegas comes with a new color shade, the Plasma Red, and an interesting innovation in the headlights department, which combines the matrix of LED technology and laser to a single optical drive.

According to the Germans, the LED bundles provide light on the low beam, while the high beam headlamp is covered by the laser light. These are more powerful than LED lights, have a longer life, consume less and manage to illuminate across ranges of 500 meters in front of the car.
The laser headlight technology is not an absolute novelty, this technology being first announced in 2011 by BMW and mounted on the recently launched BMW i8.

The Audi Sport Quattro is much larger than the old concept, measuring 4602 mm long, 1964 mm wide and 1386 mm high. The Old Quattro, measured 4280 mm long, 1860 mm wide and 1330 mm high. And at the level of wheelbase, differences are observed, being 184 mm greater in the case of Sport Quattro (2784 mm).

Under the hood of the concept that will be presented in Las Vegas is hiding the same hybrid system consisting of a twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter connected to an electric motor. This ensemble develops a total of 700 horsepower, which is transmitted to all four wheels through an automatic gearbox with eight steps.

Both engines can operate separately and together. When both share their resources, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is done in 3.7 seconds and top speed reaches 305 km / h.
Even in these circumstances, Audi claims that the Quattro Sport will consume 2.5 l / 100 km and deliver only 59 g / km. Also, the energy stored in the battery can be sufficient to run 50 km.

The passenger compartment structure combines aluminum with high-strength steel to cut down weight as much as possible. Also, for this reason doors and fenders are made of aluminum and the hood, roof and trunk door made of carbon fiber. Even with these efforts, the German model gets to weigh 1,850 kilograms, likely influenced by the large battery pack.
