Audi R8 E-Tron - Barnd's First Electric Supercar Gets Series Version In March
|   Friday, February 06, 2015
Audi R8 e-tron will receive a serial version at this year's Geneva Motor Show edition (5 - 15 March 2015). The model that will be unveiled within the event scheduled for early March of each year will represent the new generation of the R8.

Along with the exhibit which is the first electric series supercar from Audi, the second generation of the Audi R8 will also be exposed. The new version of the Audi R8 e-tron is expected to provide a range of about 400 kilometers and its launch intention was confirmed about a year ago.

Audi has presented in the past an electric variation of R8, which it also called e-tron, and has seen a series version, but no one ever offered it to the public. The model was built in 10 copies. This model would be enough to cost a million euro apiece.

Because of this, the people at Audi said it would not have made sense to sell it to customers in this form because it did not meet the premium requirements of the customers. Instead, these units were used for various demonstrative purposes from tests with journalists to a record on the Nurburgring track. This record was achieved by former F1 driver Markus Winkelhock.

The first electric version of the Audi R8 receive two electric motors - one on each axle, each generating 312 hp and a maximum torque of 820 Nm. Audi announced that autonomy under ideal conditions was 215 kilometers and the performance of the electric version was also interesting: 4.6 seconds for 0 to 100 km / h and a top speed electronically limited to 200 km / h for range preservation.

"That [e-tron] will be introduced with the successor of the R8, and we will have first example of the car … in next March, at Geneva, so you will see, it's done. First I did agree to stop such a project. The project had to be re-engineered because the range was 220km – it was not enough. So what I made with the team was to continue to work on this, and we could realise between 400 and 500 [kilometres battery range]. Or, something beyond 400 km" stated Ulrich Hackenberg for Car Advice, Audi board member for technical development.

Apart from the electric version, the second version of the Audi R8 will be available with a V8 engine displacing 4.2 liters as well as with a V10 engine displacing 5.2 liters. The latter unit is borrowed from the Lamborghini Huracan. On the other hand, the latest generation of the R8 will be built around the same carbon fiber and aluminum chassis but it will have a longer wheelbase and a somewhat wider track.
It is also interesting that Audi dropped its current manual transmission. Instead, they go for an improved version of the S-tronic seven-speed automatic transmission for this new version.

Hackenberg thinks that such gearboxes are the best: "Double-clutch gearboxes are extremely sporty, and if you want to drive extremely sporty and fast, for the record of your personal lap time, you will need a double-clutch."
