Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro: Same Name But With New Technologies For Le Mans 2014
|   Thursday, December 19, 2013
Audi R18 e-tron quattro is the model with which the Germans will compete in the 24 hours of Le Mans, starting with the 2014 season. It retains the name of its predecessor but includes many new technologies.

The main novelty is the propulsion system: in addition to a slightly revised diesel V6 engine and the front KERS system, which involves recovering energy released when braking, the R18 e-tron quattro includes a system that converts the heat from the exhaust system in electricity.
Practically, the technology is similar to that which will be used in Formula 1 starting from the 2014 season.

In addition, the German manufacturer has operated some small changes from an aesthetic point of view, including redesigning the front fenders, reducing the width by 10 mm, and adding 20 mm in height. The new Audi R18 e-tron quattro has already been tested in secret at the Sebring circuit in the United States.

"The next Audi R18 e-tron quattro represents a completely new generation of Le Mans prototypes," said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport. "The principles of the LMP1 regulations have fundamentally changed. The idea behind this is to achieve similarly fast lap times as in the past with considerably less energy. Making more out of less : a forward-thinking approach.

"

Chris Reinke, Head of LMP at Audi Sport: "A fundamental approach to motorsport is being abandoned. Instead of power output, energy consumption will be subject to limitations – this is in line with the spirit of our times and opens up great technical freedoms to the engineers. In 2014, we'll be seeing a wide variety of concepts on the grid at Le Mans."

In turn, those from Porsche presented the prototype of the LMP1 class for Le Mans. It will bear the name Porsche 919 hybrid to honor the legacy of the famous 917, which competed in the 70s, and to highlight the synergy with the 918 Spyder, a model that will soon come into production.

The international media conveys the idea that the engine will be a V4 on petrol, and will have two energy recovery systems, from a conceptual point of view similar to those available in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. The car has already been tested on the Algarve circuit in Portugal.

Audi and Porsche adopted an energy recovery strategy that is different from the one chosen by Toyota, the other big manufacturer that will take part in the Le Mans LMP1 class. The Japanese picked two KERS system that recover energy during braking, one mounted on the front axle and one on the rear axle.

"The vehicle name 919 hybrid follows on from the tradition of the Le Mans-winning 917, but it is also with a view to the 918 Spyder, and acknowledges the company's embarkation into the hybrid future," Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche R&D chief said. "Maximum efficiency in energy consumption is the directive of the new WEC regulations for the works-entered class 1 prototypes--and that is also the direction for the automobile future."
