Audi Q7 To Get New Generation By The End Of Next Year
|   Monday, April 07, 2014
2006 is the year that began to see the Audi Q7 on the market. Now, the Audi Q7 is set to receive a new platform with the second generation, scheduled to be launched during the year 2015. The news comes from Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, head of the brand's research and development department, which he discussed with the Americans from Car & Driver.

The new platform that will underpin the Q7 is called the MLB Evo, and is the second generation of the MLB platform. It is significantly lighter than the previous version, while presenting many enhanced features. The MLB Evo platform will be accompanied in the Q7 range and Audi portfolio by a new family of engines. These will be developed in collaboration with Porsche engineers.

In addition, Audi will develop the RS versions for several models in the range. Most likely, the A3 is among the first that will receive an RS performance version, continuing the tradition of the RS3.

"Audi engineers are still quite independent. An Audi must have a unique aura, a unique execution, and it must offer its own powertrains. There is a focus on Quattro, and there will be RS versions topping almost every vehicle range" said Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg.

On the list of releases we can find RS versions of the new TT and other models in the range, although the Audi official was reserved in his statements on this subject. He avoided clearly confirming or denying any model name that will get the RS version in the near future.

Audi's Nanuk concept equipped with a V10 TDI, presents one of the possible directions that the collaboration between Audi and Porsche could follow concerning various engines. The Germans will focus on the development of large displacement engines, particularly the V8 units, left Hackenberg to be understood form the interview.

The V12 engine TDI, presented by Audi in the past, and sold in small volumes, could continue to exist in the range, although a small number of sales was achieved and it involves an expensive development. V12 petrol fueled engines could have a future in the Germans range, although their destination was not specified.

"It is very important for us, and it should not be reduced to the car being able to drive itself on a routine basis. I think it should be about making life easier for the driver, relieving him of complex tasks—and, only in extreme cases, having the car take over. The car could handle stop-and-go traffic, or execute passing maneuvers.

I have defined two situations that an autonomous car must handle above all else. The first one is getting a car from the fast lane of a three-lane autobahn to a safe stop, say, if the driver has a heart attack. It needs to be able to work its way through traffic and come to a stop on the shoulder where it is safe to do so. That is a formidable task. The other one: The car needs to be faster on the racetrack than I am" said Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg.
