Audi Preparing 100 Percent Electric SUV With Range Of Over 500 Kilometers
|   Friday, March 20, 2015
After the R8 e-tron, the first electric series model from Audi, the Germans are preparing to launch a 100 percent electric SUV.
The announcement was made by Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, the head of the brand's development department, which announced the future model soon after unveiling the first electric series car bearing the mark of the Ingolstadt manufacturer, the R8 e-tron.

Contrary to expectations, the model will not resemble anything in the current range, so we cannot expect an electric Q7's version, explains Hackenberg.
To compensate for the presence of batteries that will ensure the range autonomy mentioned above, the SUV from Audi will use the MLB platform and will make extensive use of more lightweight materials.

"It will have a specific design, so we won't take and A6 or a Q5 or whatever and integrate the battery electric drivetrain. The build system has the same architecture as an MLB car, that means we can build it in an MLB plant. MLB means that we can work with steel, with a mixture of materials and also with aluminium" Hackenberg said.

The Audi chief promises a new generation of batteries, ready to launch onto electric vehicles in the year 2018. It will have double the capacity compared to existing units without requiring a larger package. With regards to the electric SUV from Audi, Hackenberg talks about launching a battery that has an intermediate capacity of 37 Ah. For comparison, the battery of the Volkswagen E - Golf has 25 Ah, while future batteries for electric cars in Audi's 2018 range will reach the value of 25 Ah without increasing the size.

"We started with a 25AH [Ampere-hour] battery, now we have 28AH, we have 37AH samples for the next-generation of PHEVs and in this big EV I have talked about we will also have a battery capacity of 37ah. The next-generation has 41AH and then 50AH. We will see this increase by 2018 to around 2020. And we see that in the road map of the cell producers that there will be still higher capacities. If you look to the package of the e-Golf, it's able to run 180km in the test cycle and that's with a 25aH battery, if you have a 50AH battery you can increase range to more than 300km, which makes things interesting. If you take a bigger car, like we are doing, then it should be possible to use a 90KWh battery, which is enough to satisfy most demands of a customer" stated Hackenberg.

In terms of the bodywork chosen for the future electric model, Hackenberg recognizes that the a sedan will not be the happiest choice, given the need to locate a bulky battery pack that could affect the interior space. Meanwhile, a model in the Q range would not have a good enough drag coefficient, because it has a generous front area, which produces high aerodynamic resistance. The final project could mark a crossover between the two bodywork styles to satisfy both aerodynamic requirements of the engineers and practical aspects of the vehicle.

"It's a more passenger orientated car, so for more than two passengers. But it will be a car which can be used by families that have some money, it is premium. It will have a big battery capacity and a range of more than 500km (313 miles). We will make a presentation soon" he continued.
