Audi plans to develop a new technology aimed at reducing turbo lag
|   Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Audi is currently working on a new technology called the bi turbo engine which uses an electric turbo charger facility which is capable of marginally reducing engine lag, if not get completely rid of it. The proto type is being designed on the 3.0 liter V6 bi turbo engine and is currently in its primary stages of development if the company sources are believed.

The V6 uses a turbo charger which is exhaust driven and is designed especially for low speed movements.
The reduction in the turbo lag means that the performance of the vehicle has been enhanced. The time required for the acceleration to kick in and the turbo to blast off is reduced and hence the car will be a huge hit performance wise.

Engineers from Audi had been working hard to get the balance right and the project has seen many ups and downs since it was formulated. The fundamental principle behind the design is transferring enough exhaust gas to the turbo charger that it kicks in prematurely which gives the vehicle the required thrust at high speeds for that added speed.

However, the main problem that the engineers are facing is the need for induction of the air force to the turbo chargers at low speeds. If this is monitored and done, the turbo charger will kick in at low speeds as well and this can help the vehicles reduce lag time by a considerable margin.
To overcome this problem, the engineers from Audi are using two separate turbo chargers for the engine. The smaller turbo gives the vehicle the much needed boost when the vehicle is at low speeds and the bigger turbo charger diffuses the gap between high and low speeds.

This is an innovative and bold designing principle as a minor flaw could lead to a blown up engine with so much power stacked into it. The new design is basically a store house for turbo chargers and Audi have done a recommendable job of coming up with the idea.

BMW needs to work on the low speed performance of its vehicles and the turbo lag has not been helping its purpose in any way. However, spokespeople from Audi are hopeful of a successful outcome and Audi reports total trust on its group of dedicated and hard working engineers and designers.

The new electric operated turbo charger sits over the induction turbo charger of the engine and this boosts the vehicle during the course of downward power transmission. However, at low speeds, preferably at the stand still point, the turbo boosts up the engine and the high force enables the car to move forward with a greater thrust.

A proto type is expected from Audi by the middle of 2013 and the engineers are currently working on the single machine. If Audi is successful in designing this technology with 100 % success, car manufacturing is set to be propelled into a new dimension. People are waiting eagerly for any further announcements and the technology has already found worldwide support.
