Audi Might Launch Range Of Performance Diesels Without RS Badge
|   Monday, October 27, 2014
Along with the presentation of the RS5 TDI Concept, rumors of a range of performance diesels from Audi began to intensify for a while now.
Hollerweger Heinz, director of Quattro GmbH, has revealed some information about the potential performance range equipped with diesel engines. In an interview with the Americans from Car & Driver, Hollerweger said it a decision was not yet taken to producing diesel models that carry the name RS, despite presenting the RS5 TDI concept.
However, the Quattro senior director does not exclude the possibility of a diesel performance model in the future but it will not be called RS.

The Audi RS5 TDI Concept coupe was a special version of the Germans celebrating 25 years of the TDI engine. That concept demonstrates the new technological innovations of the Audi brand and is equipped with a twin-turbo V6 TDI, on which it was applied an electric turbine, and hybrid systems operating at 48 volts, in order to engage the respective technological solution .

Audi announced a power of 385 hp and maximum torque of 750 Nm for the new diesel engine. Because of these resources, the model can accelerate from 0 to100 km / h in four seconds, and can achieve the sprint from 0 to 200 km / h in less than 16 seconds. The model is capable of a maximum speed of 280 km / h and has a combined fuel consumption of 5.3 liters per 100 km.

Since presenting the concept, Audi refused to confirm for production the engine exposed by the RS5 TDI. But the electric turbine technology could make its appearance in the Germans' range in the years to come, as explained by Ulrich Hackenberg, head of development of the German brand. This turbine works by using 48 volt electrical systems that are in the process of being adapted for production vehicles.

The next-gen R8, scheduled for next year, will be offered with the V8 and V10 naturally aspirated powerplants, while the twin-turbo V8 on the RS7 is likely to be developed further. "I think people with money still want to buy horsepower," Hollerweger said, "but we have to deliver that alongside a lowering of CO2."

Also, it seems the next generation RS5 coupe and cabriolet will keep their V8s. "We are still developing V8 engines, although application will depend on segment. There will still be cars in the C- and D-segment with eight cylinders, and maybe also the B-segment —look at Mercedes, they have introduced the C63 with an eight-cylinder." This makes sense if Quattro is planning a similar future for the RS4 and RS5.

Hollerweger also said that serious thought is being given to equipping the new R8 with a turbocharged engine for markets where fuel consumption and CO2 figures are critical: "Let me say we may have to split the segment a little bit. For the really high-power engine in the R8, the naturally aspirated V10 will always be the best solution. But if you think about an engine lower than ten or eight cylinders also in this car, then there could be an alternative with a turbocharger. There could be."
