Audi Introduced Autonomous Driving Technology Concept Based On R8 E-Tron
|   Sunday, June 21, 2015
Presented in world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Audi R8 e-tron second generation electric supercar was brought to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Shanghai in a version equipped with autonomous driving systems.
The autopilot of the Audi R8 e-tron, Piloted Driving Concept is governed by data received from ultrasonic sensors, radars, cameras and a laser scanner. This equipment provides a complete image of the whole area around the car.
The information is transmitted to the zFAS block management, which is an electronic chip with the size of a tablet. The electronic system is able to drive the car without any help from the driver.
The prototype is powered by two electric motors producing a total of 462 horsepower and a torque of 920 Nm (678 lb-ft). Thanks to these resources, the coupe version can reach the first hundred km per hour in just 3.9 seconds while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. To scroll through distances up to 450 km on full batteries, it needs connection to the electricity grid for a period of about 2 hours. In addition, the concept integrates the Combined Charging System (CCS), which allows electric power supply, alternating current sources (AC) and continuous current sources (DC). The company also announced that it is working intensively on an inductive charging system too, called Audi Wireless Charging (AWC) for its e-tron models.
According to several sources from Audi, the first autonomous model of the German brand will be the next A8 flagship, which will debut no earlier than 2017. For starters, the limo will drive autonomously only partially on highways or in the parking lot.
So far, those at Audi had already presented the concept of an autonomous A7 who traveled independently a portion of the German A9 highway, as well as the RS7 concept that has completed a circuit tour without the help of the pilot, speeding down some portion at 200 km/h.
Audi says the new R8 e-tron Piloted Driving Concept is a combination of future technologies: new solutions in terms of the use of lightweight materials, self-government and with a potent powertrain and pure ecological point of view.
"The key message for our customers: Our efficiency technologies are ready for series production and customer roll-out. The same applies to our current flagship technology – piloted driving", stated Ulrich Hackenberg Audi board member speaking at the show.
"The Audi R8 e-tron piloted driving represents the technology trends of our industry. China is Audi's largest single market worldwide" declared Rupert Stadler, Audi CEO.
Also, in China, the company is teaming up with search-giant Baidu to offer mapping, positioning, and other points-of-interest data for their passengers.
Those who took part at the event in Shanghai were able to actually take the Audi R8 E-Tron and test the autonomous pilot mode through Shanghai's very busy streets, all in order to see just how well the feature works in real life.
