Audi Gains On BMW As Global Sales Rise 14.9% In August
|   Wednesday, September 12, 2012
The sales for Audi's latest model have increased with 14.9 percent amounting to 108,100 units in the previous month. This represents the all time high for August and it helps reduce the difference between BMW's sales in the past 8 months, the top dog on the market, and Audi.

At the end of the month of August, BMW made 963,110 units, a rise of 7.8 percent while at the same time Audi sold 961,000 vehicles, which is a rise of 12.7 percent. So, we have a situation in which BMW took Audi's face by just 2,110 units.
Another great manufacturer and competitor, Mercedes, sold 841,567 units in the same period, meaning an increase of 5.4 percent. However, the Bavarian brand would still top Audi by around 20,000 cars this year, if their sales growth rates registered to this point stay constant.

But Audi has some cards too: the dominance in China plus the European launch of its high volume compact the A3 hatchback, at the end of the previous month. These factors might favor the VW owned premium brand.

It should happen, as this is a crucial matter to the Volkswagen Group, since the A3 will be one of the highest volume cars based on its new MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten) development and production architecture; on a side note, that platform also underpins the new Golf and, in theory, should significantly reduce production costs and manufacturing time.

For the record, Volkswagen AG will introduce the Modular Transverse Matrix platform this year, known as the MQB, for the Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen brands worldwide.

"New models like the A3 and the refreshed Q5 that also launches in the coming days, will strengthen Audi in Europe even more," stated Luca de Meo, the company's new marketing and sales boss.

Audi car demand is growing in every major market. Even in the Europe that seems to be the case, and that is a bit surprising considering the auto market is going through a crisis right now because of economic conditions.
China, Audi's largest market, continued to be the brand's workhorse, giving volumes a 24.0 percent boost last month to 34,800 units, indicating that one out of three Audis sold worldwide was in China. This led to a combined sales tally of 261,548 for the first 8 months, a rise of 33.1 percent.

Overall, sales Europe rose by 8.0 percent to 47,800 last month, seemingly defying a drop in consumer confidence caused by the euro-zone crisis. In the first 8 months, sales went up 3.6 percent to 501,900 units. Sales in Audi's largest European market, Germany, were on the rise 9.0 percent in July reaching 20,180 units, and by 7.9 percent over 8 months leading to 178,065 units.

In the UK,sales grew 14.7 percent to 4,144. Audi sales in Russia for the month increased the most percentages: 47.9, meaning 2,972 units.
In the United States, the third-biggest market for Audi, sales were up 13 percent to 11,527 units, scoring a total of 17.5 percent in 8 months and 75,256 units total.

In 2011, BMW sold 1.38 million cars and SUVs, Audi sold 1.3 million units, and Mercedes sold 1.26 million vehicles.
