Audi Electric SUV: "Sexy" Design And a Range Of 500 Kilometers
|   Wednesday, May 13, 2015
From a while Audi was preparing extensions to its e-tron range with an electric SUV. The Germans will propose a sexy approach to this and ensure a range autonomy of 500 kilometers.

Audi has already confirmed the new Q6 debut, its first SUV similar to a coupe, designed to beat the BMW X6. However, it is unclear whether the new Q6 will be linked to Audi's promise for a future all-electric SUV scheduled to arrive in 2018.

Present at the Auto Show in Shanghai, Rupert Stadler, Audi's CEO, said that the future electric SUV will be a car bearing the following characteristics: "sexy", "packed with utility" and "sporty.
It will be built after a different design philosophy than that of standard models.

Stadler recognizes that in the next 10-15 years plug-in hybrid vehicles will be successful. The official is confident that by then the infrastructure for zero emission vehicles will grow considerably.

China is already preparing an ambitious project, which involves charging stations that will cover approximately 16,000 km to 17,000 km of highway, by the year 2020. According to press in China, there will be charging stations every 50 kilometers. Therefore, the fear of a low range will be considerably reduced.

Expected to launch in 2018, the new 100 percent electric model, the second product of this kind in the e-tron range after the new R8 e-tron presented at Geneva, aims to fight on equal footing with the Tesla Model X, an SUV that the American brand is preparing to launch in 2016.

In order to duel with it, the Audi electric SUV will be one of the proposals with the greatest ranges in the market. Ulrich Hackenberg, head of research and development, promises that the battery pack can store enough energy for a total range of 500 km, significantly more than the 430 kilometers announced by the Model X. Moreover, the SUV will charge 80 percent of its battery in just 20 minutes.

At the Shanghai Motor Show, Stadler has reconfirmed the launching of a future large SUV, positioned over the Q7. It will compete with the Range Rover SVAutobiography, which recently released a deluxe version, or the much anticipated Maybach Mercedes GLS, the opulent derivative of the current GL.

"Some years ago SUVs were disliked and seen as not fuel efficient, we have proved through lightweight technology and electric drive trains that they can be highly efficient. Believe me, the premium customer is prepared to pay a little bit more to say I'm doing everything well for the environment. Now with our engineers and our battery-cell suppliers we are at a stage where we can say, yes, this is feasible and we believe that with the ongoing investments in terms of infrastructure development we think that 2018-2019 is the right time to come up with such a car. It will look nice, it will have sufficient range and we think the infrastructure will be sufficient in terms of supercharging" Stadler said.

For the period between 2015 - 2019 Audi has an investment plan amounting to 24 billion euro - the largest in the company's history. Audi Group sold a total of 1,741,129 Audi and Lamborghini models last year, up 10.5 percent compared to 2013 when 1,575,480 units were delivered. Also, the Audi Group had an operating profit of 5.15 billion euro last year, rising 2.4 percent compared to 2013 when it had 5.03 billion euro.
