Audi and Volkswagen trying to convert the 300mpg dream into reality
|   Friday, December 14, 2012
Luxury car manufacturer Audi, along with Volkswagen is trying to manufacture cars that will be the most fuel efficient cars in the market, running at about 300 miles per gallon.

Fuel efficiency of a car has been the topic of discussion in the car market for quite some time now. Following the deficiency of non-renewable fuel resources such as petrol and diesel, and the resultant price hike, fuel efficiency has been of prime concern.

There have been many attempts to make fuel efficient cars.
The hybrid technique, combining the petrol engine with an electric driven motor engine has been tried out by many manufacturers in different models. The hybrid models provided better fuel efficiency than before but nothing close to 300 miles per gallon was achieved.

Audi and Volkswagen have tried out to convert the 300 miles per gallon fantasy into a reality. This concept is being tested from as far back as 2009, but there has not been much success.

Recently, these two companies have had a breakthrough in this particular field of research. The results have been promising enough and the companies give their word to produce such fuel efficient cars in very recent future, hopefully within three to four years. This idea may materialize in the time period of 2015 to 2016.

Audi is planning to design the car on the previous model of the Audi A1. This company plans to stick with a small gasoline. This engine is going to be supported with a small electric motor drive. The concept reveals the car to have a 1 litre engine. This car promises fuel efficiency of about 280 miles per gallon. The car will be simply called the 1litre car due to its unique specifications. The car may be a small four seated light model built on the A1 chassis.

Volkswagen plans to go with a diesel engine. In the year 2009, Volkswagen launched a concept of a car running about 285 miles per gallon called the L1.the concept remained a concept and the concept was reintroduced with better specifications as the XL1. The concept showed the car to be unbelievably light, at around a few hundred kilos. This concept also included an electric motor for backup power. The new model is supposed to be based on this earlier concept.

The prices of the cars are going to be an issue. It is not going to be cheap, with such fuel efficiencies. Based on rumours from reliable sources, the price will be around a hundred thousand dollars. The car will not be within the reach of common people at first but the prices are supposed to go down to an affordable range with time. For now it will be an exclusive toy for the wealthy personalities.

The concept is still going to be popular, no matter what the price may be. The concept promises fuel efficiency as much as twice offered by any other models of any leading car manufacturing brands. The concept has received great appreciation in its initial stage, now it is a matter of time to let it materialize.
