Audi A4, A5 and A6 To Receive Economic Ultra Versions
|   Saturday, February 15, 2014
Audi expands its range of low-emission vehicles. The German manufacturer unveiled the Ultra versions of the A4, A5 and A6. The family is expanding after debuting in August last year with the A3 Ultra, the most economical Audi model in the world that consumes only 3.2 liters / 100 km.

The Ultra designation is correspondent for the BlueMotion range, found in its parent Volkswagen range and the current rival for BMW's Efficient Dynamics. AS expected, the folks from Audi are trying to show to the customers in the premium segment that there is a continuing concern for reducing CO2 emissions and, consequently, fuel consumption.

Audi Board Member for Development, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said that "The latest TDI technology, ultra-efficient transmissions, advanced exhaust after treatment – customers will hardly see anything, but they'll notice the effects of powerful acceleration and, thanks to extremely low fuel consumption, when paying at the gas station. The Audi ultra models score points with big advantages for everyday operation – just what customers appreciate."

The new Ultra versions come equipped as standard equipment with a Start-Stop system and a system that informs the driver of the rolling effectiveness. In the case of the A4 and A4 Avant version, the Ultra versions bring a number of aerodynamic improvements designed to reduce air friction. Also, the ground clearance is lowered by a few millimeters, also for aerodynamic reasons. On the list of changes we can likewise see low rolling resistance tires and a manual transmission with slightly longer ratios.

The A4 Ultra and the A4 Avant Ultra are available alongside a 2.0 TDI diesel engine capable of delivering two different power versions. The first guarantees 136 hp and 320 Nm, and the second 163 horsepower and 400 Nm. In the case of the more moderate version, fuel consumption reaches only 3.9 liters/100 km and 4.2 liters for the A4 Avant Ultra.

The A5 Coupe and A5 Sportback models, also available in Ultra version, are offered only in the variant with 163 horsepower developed by the 2.0 TDI units. It guarantees a consumption of 4.2 liters and emissions of 109 g/km, for the A5 Coupe, and 4.3 liters and 111 g/km for the A5 Sportback.

For the other two models announced, the A6 Ultra and A6 Avant Ultra, Audi also uses the 2.0 liter TDI, but is able to give a little more power: 190 hp and 400 Nm. In this situation, Audi gives up on the manual transmission in favor of an S-tronic transmission with seven steps geared towards efficiency. It is able to deliver an average fuel consumption of 4.4 liters for the sedan and 4.6 liters for the other model. Emission levels stand at 114 g/km respectively 119 g/km.

Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Audi's Head of Powertrain Development said that "An innovative, highly efficient SCR system removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. This measure means that the new ultra models will of course meet the future Euro 6 emission standards while achieving lower fuel consumption."
