Aston Martin Could Get A Mercedes-Benz Platform

Aston Martin could expand the partnership with Mercedes-Benz through the implementation of a platform developed by AMG division. Currently, the English receive the V8 engines, and electronic elements from Mercedes-Benz.

Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, said the partnership with Mercedes-Benz has a potential that has not yet been exploited. Together with the manufacturer from Stuttgart, the British supercar manufacturer may launch its first SUV model that could be used to revive the Lagonda brand.
This possibility was announced by Ulrich Bez in 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show. Back then the representative of Aston Martin talked about the Mercedes-Benz GL platform for the first modern model of the Lagonda.

The partnership with Mercedes-Benz will allow Aston Martin to be flexible in terms of engines. Although the unit will stay in the V12 engine range, with a 6.0 liter displacement, the British needed a partner to provide smaller 4.0 liter engines and even less for their performance models. These units are required when certain markets additional fees apply for certain engine types, as is the case currently on the market in China, where over 4.0 liters thrusters are being charged extra.

The Lagonda SUV could be launched in 2017, say the British from Autocar, and it might be based on the platform of the future Mercedes-Benz ML. Ulrich Bez was inspired by Volkswagen in this partnership, declaring himself impressed by the business model of the German group in terms of platform brothers Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg.

Ulrich Bez said "If you look at how Porsche and Volkswagen worked together to produce two completely different cars, it would be possible to have a similar arrangement with Mercedes so long as our car was clearly and distinctly an Aston Martin."

That is interesting because the original plan was to launch Lagonda as a stand-alone brand. But now, and partly because of the death of Mercedes' premium brand Maybach, the Lagonda name will be used as a model, not a brand.

"In places where this car must sell, like China, no-one has even heard of Lagonda," said Bez. "We are working hard to build Aston Martin over there so what's the point of doing it all over again with a name no-one knows? We can call the car Lagonda, and even put the Lagonda wings on it, but it would be an Aston Martin Lagonda."

"Aston Martin sources cutting edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next generation sports cars is, clearly, good news," Ian Minards, company product development director declared.

Because AMG is a fully owned subsidiary of parent Daimler AG, it is also possible Aston Martin might access other Mercedes architectures and engines. Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez previously told reporters, "Four- or even three-cylinders are possible. If the spirit of the times demands six-cylinders, then it has to be looked at," thus indicating the British brand might go for downsized engines from Mercedes.
