Aston Martin Confirms Developing Of New Technical Platforms
|   Monday, May 12, 2014
Aston Martin, one of the few exotic car makers unaffiliated with any large manufacturer, announced that it will replace its VH platform launched 13 years ago. The announcement of a replacement for the old platform, which gave life to almost every Aston Martin model from the past 13 years, is an important one for a niche manufacturer which carries small volumes and has no significant financial support because this involves major investment.

The year when the new platform will be launched was not mentioned, but we can expect it to be used for future models from British range, as of yet also unannounced, although the British from Auto Express announces its debut in 2016, with new generation DB9.

Only two models from Aston Martin did not use the VH platform over the past 13 years, and both have been axed: Cygnet and One-77.
The Aston Martin new platform will have the V8 engine developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG, the technical partner of the niche British manufacturer. Besides the engine, Mercedes-Benz AMG may provide certain electronic components, such as sensors and other parts. Regarding the V12 engines used enthusiastically by the manufacturer in Gaydon, they will no longer be provided by Ford. The contract with them has been extended (for the last time) until 2018. Nevertheless, the name of the new supplier is still unknown, although some say that Mercedes-Benz could ensure future units with 12 cylinders arranged in a V.

"We made excellent progress on a number of fronts in 2013: growing our global sales, improving our EBITDA and building further on the company's strong brand as we celebrated our centenary around the globe. We will, in the next few years, be implementing the biggest investment program in our 101-year history, preparing the ground for new and exciting products in the future. Our strong ownership structure and strategic partnership with Daimler AG, finalized in December 2013, provides us with a solid foundation for the unprecedented investment program that will underpin our future growth" said Aston Martin Chief Financial Officer, Hanno Kirner commented.

"We are engineering a completely new architecture and technologies to ensure that our next generation of sports cars is at the forefront of design, performance and technology. The strategic partnership with Daimler AG will bring with it cutting edge electrical and electronic architecture expertise, and the shared development of world-class bespoke V8 powertrains," Kirner continued.

The British from Aston Martin announced the new platform alongside the financial results of the 2013 fiscal year. The revenues of the Gaydon brand rose by 13 percent, thanks to the launch of the Vanquish Volante and V12 Vantage S models. In addition, the financial results of Aston Martin have been improved by entering the markets of Mexico and Thailand. The financing for the development of the new platform is provided by the foreign shareholders of the company, Investindustrial, Primewagon and Adeem Investment.

The British company's CEO said that he refuses hybridization of the range to reduce fuel consumption. A hybrid system that provide some extra temporary 100 horses, or more, is not required if it comes with an increase in the vehicle's mass. Instead, it is preferred to reduce the weight of future models as much as possible, and improve the effectiveness of future powertrains. Another solution is to encourage customers to reduce the speed, the CEO being convinced that this is one of the reasons for high fuel consumption.
