Aston Martin Completes the Zero Emission Lap Challenge at Nurburgring

Aston Martin has successfully raced a Hydrogen Hybrid Rapide around the Nurburgring track, creating a world record for being the first car maker to complete a lap in a hydrogen powered race car around Nurburgring. The 24 Hours race is an FIA sponsored event and Aston Martin is looking forward to devising technology that could be successfully used in the future in manufacturing road cars.

This project was conceived late last year when Alset Global, Aston Martin's technology partner came up with the idea to transform a petrol powered vehicle to hydrogen power.
Adaptive drive train and advanced power train manufacturing is the forte of Alset Global and the company has the necessary expertise to modify the drive train. Aston Martin was keen on the project from the first day itself. However, they wanted to manufacture a race car over a standard road car to test the potential of the technology in most demanding situations.

Alset Global is a world leader when it comes to developing power train systems and this conversion from a conventional petrol drive train to a hydrogen hybrid was made possible by the firm. Aston Martin chose a Rapide S for the transformation as it is the only vehicle large enough to provide the necessary space required for the transformation.

The Nurburgring track is being used by Aston Martin for trying out new vehicles for the past eight years and getting hold of the track was not really difficult to test the Rapide S Hydrogen Hybrid. The Rapide S was stripped out to its bare bones and reconstructed over time to install the new drive train in order to get the car to its actually intended form.

The hard ware kit added to the Rapide S to allow the transformation added an excess of 80 kg to the already bulked up vehicle and as a result the vehicle needed to be stripped and reassembled. This was not much of a problem considering the fact that the people at Alset Global are experts in their field. However, this was a time consuming project.

The transformation looks so complete and original hat it is a shame that the engineers at Aston Martin could not come up with this plan themselves. However, Alset Global is known for their ingenuity and Aston Martin paired up with the firm keeping in mind their niche aspects. The total weight of the completed car is close to 1600 kg.

The necessary transformation on this car includes four additional fuel tanks placed over the rear axle and each holds close to 3.3 kg of hydrogen.
The hydrogen is carried to the Aston Martin's V12 6.0 liter engine which needs no excess hardware to carry on the transformation. This engine is able to run to petrol, hydrogen or a mixture of both depending upon the driver's choice. Equalizing the power delivery was the biggest challenge faced by the engineers at Alset Global although that problem was taken care of quickly. The Rapide S Hydrogen Hybrid should be sent for production soon.
