Ariel Nomad - First Off-Roader From Carmaker Specialized In Extreme Roadsters
|   Saturday, January 10, 2015
Ariel is a British company known for the Atom roadster and it has taken the decision to launch the first model with off-road capacities in its range. The name of the new model is Nomad and is designed to bridge the gap between the existing track-focused sports car and a pure 4x4 off-roader. It is described by Ariel boss Simon Saunders as "Atom's mucky brother".

The Ariel Atom is one of the most famous models in the roadster world. And from January 2015 it will have a brother that could be used on almost any surface.
The new Ariel Nomad is a roadster with off-road capacities. Despite the fact that it has traction on only one axle, the new model benefits from special tires and a generous ground clearance.

The suspension has a broad stroke to recoup bumps and the driving position and passenger seat protected by a durable roll cage. The chassis is also strengthened in order to make an intensive use on rough terrain. The new Ariel Nomad will use 15-inch wheels in the beginning with 235/70 tires, but subsequently other combinations will be available.

This reinforced cabin makes a perfect car for recreational driving on forest tracks and challenging off-road trails or for competition in rallies for two-wheel-drive cars.
"We've done quite a bit of testing on forest tracks and rally stages, and results have been extremely encouraging. We know the car is quick and stable. But it's still a two-wheel-drive vehicle. We're looking forward to discovering how it performs in genuine off-road conditions - in mud or crawling over rocks - compared with a traditional 4x4." said Saunders' son Henry, the one responsible for most of the development and testing, for Britain's Autocar.

According to them, power will be provided by a four-cylinder Honda motor displacing 2.4 liters. The engine power will be around 200 hp plus enough torque at low revs. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a manual gearbox with six speeds, all Honda in origin. The Ariel Nomad will benefit from a limited slip differential provided in the standard equipment.
"The car should still be very quick on road. Not quite as quick as an Atom, maybe, but it will be able to do many things an Atom never could." said Henry Siebert-Saunders.

The owners will be able to customize their cars through their own choice of colors for wheels, frame, hood, and engine cover.
The reduced weight of the Atom model, which was instrumental for its supercar performance, is largely kept on the Nomad model too. Ariel is still working on the final specification, but the Nomad is expected to weigh about 700 kg, when it is ready to go. This weight is about 150 kg more than the basic the Atom, but still less than half the weight of a traditional off-roader. Therefore, the Nomad model should have more or less four times the power to weight ratio of a Land Rover Defender.
Expect the new Ariel Nomad to probably have a basic price of about 30,000 pounds (38,000 euro).
