Apple Is Working On A Secret Car Project
|   Wednesday, April 08, 2015
Apple is working on a project of an electric car internally called Project Titan. In this project a team of about a thousand engineers are working, writes the Wall Street Journal, citing company sources.

The general manager of Apple, Tim Cook started the project a year ago by entrusting its leadership to Steve Zadesky, a former engineer for Ford.
The representatives of the American giant had meetings with a number of automakers, including Magna Steyr, which has produced in the past passenger cars for BMW or Mercedes.
The Apple car looks like a minivan, according to the source.

Magna Steyr is a company based in Graz, Austria, which is a subsidiary of the Canadian conglomerate Magna International and was previously part of the Steyr-Daimler-Puch group. During the financial crisis, Magna has tried the takeover of the German manufacturer Opel, along with a Russian state bank Sberbank group, but the deal failed.

People at Apple would try to replicate the method also used in electronics, respectively the design is their own but the manufacturing is done by someone else; iPhone and iPad gadgets are assembled by Foxconn in China.

For engineers a fierce competition with Tesla Motors took place. Recently, there were many announcements saying that those from Apple are trying to recruit automotive engineers and designers for a secret project. Thus, the US giant has lured employees from Tesla, an American manufacturer of appreciated electric cars, founded by entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Reuters notes that among those recruited by Apple is Johann Jungwirth, former President and CEO of North America Mercedes-Benz Research and Development. The Agency notes that the car would be autonomous, and Apple would be interested in gaining expertise, just as in 2005 the company has teamed up with Motorola to make Rokr, a mobile phone connected to iTunes.

A Daimler spokesman said that the team researching autonomous vehicles for Mercedes Benz remained intact. This happened because Jungwirth's specialization is on the integration of smart phone functionalities and the development of advanced experiences for users.

On the other hand, the decision to launch an electric car on the market is not yet taken by the management of Apple, and such a model could appear only after several years. Moreover, it could be just a test platform for Apple like other initiatives such as smart CarPlay, which allow the connection the car to the iPhone or iPad.
Finally, it should be noted that Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and former CEO, aspired in his last months of life to build a car. Named iCar, it had a special design, said Mickey Drexler at that time, a member of Apple's Board of Directors.

Google is already preparing intelligent cars without driver, steering wheel or pedals. Apple is the second largest IT giant which leans towards the automotive sector after Google patented a few years ago the car that drives itself. Google even made a real show of force by using the Toyota Prius hybrid car. Recently, they are trying to produce their own car which is totally electric, but without the steering wheel or pedals.
