AMG Set To Produce Lighter and More Powerful AMG GT
|   Sunday, November 09, 2014
Tobias Moers, AMG boss, confirmed in an interview that his team is working on a more efficient version of the AMG GT to rival with the Porsche 911 GT3 model.
Mercedes-AMG GT's newly introduced replacement for SLS AMG will receive sportier versions. Besides the Black Series version, already confirmed, AMG head Tobias Moers confirmed work on a lighter and more powerful GT AMG to fight the Porsche 911 GT3.

The AMG GT is expected to debut on the market in 2016 and will develop around 550 hp and have a body up to 100 kg lighter.
Due to improved specifications, the model will be able to cut 0.2 seconds of the 0 to 100 km / h time and be faster on the track and on the street, with an estimated improvement of 10 seconds on Nurburgring time.

In any case, the upcoming performance version of the AMG GT will not have the GT3 name, because Tobias Moers says "GT3 name belongs to another company", so the name of the future model is not yet determined. For the time being, it is unclear if the future model will be ready to compete in the 2016 season Fiat GT3 championship to replace the current SLS GT3, but this issue remains to be determined until the actual release of the model. In any event, Tobias Moers promises they will not build a dragster that is fast in a straight line only, being planned a total mass reduction, more power and improvements in driveability.

Moers wants a good car that excels in all areas. "I don't want to make a dragster that's only good for doing 0-100km/h [0-62mph] in 2.8sec. We need more power, less weight, better aerodynamics and different suspension but the targets should be the power to weight ratio, drivability, lap time and tremendous feel."

Another aim is to reduce weight by 80-100kg compared to the 1570 kg seen on the S version of the GT. This will not be possible without using different materials and he admits it: "The car is already 80kg lighter than the SLS and has a similar power to weight ratio, so to lose much more weight we will need to use carbon fiber as we have with our Black Series models."

The maximum speed of the future AMG GT competition model is expected to not exceed the 310 km / h in the standard version because the AMG division model will be equipped with elements that increase downforce for greater cornering stability and in a straight line, which reduces the maximum possible speed.

For the first time in the history of AMG, the division has its own full aerodynamic department and their first project could even be version the GT3, of AMG GT's. When the production model will be ready Tobias Moers promises to reduce the time of the current AMG GT at Nurburgring by about 10 seconds using standard tires.
