Alpina D4 Twin-Turbo: Fully Modified Series 4 Coupe and Cabriolet Versions At 350 HP
|   Friday, November 14, 2014
The Germans from Alpina, the specialized brand in developing models based on BMW creations which are manufactured in close relationship with the Munich company, showed the strongest versions of the Series 4 Coupe and Cabriolet equipped with diesel engines: the D4 Twin-Turbo.

The Alpina D4 Twin-Turbo it is the new proposal of the brand from Buchloe for the middle class coupe and convertible segment. We are talking about two models, the D4 Twin-Turbo Coupe, and D4 Twin-Turbo Convertible, which represent the Alpina versions of the BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible.

Both benefit from a 3.0-liter diesel engine with six cylinders, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine provides 350 hp and 700 Nm, significantly more than the 258 hp and 560 Nm of the BMW 430D model. Alpina has obtained these values by increasing injection pressure and changing the exhaust manifold, which led to a ratio of 117 hp per liter, a very good value for a turbocharged diesel engine.

The upper level of power for the engine involved changes to the ZF automatic transmission which was hardened to withstand the new value of maximum torque. In addition, it has been equipped with the system Alpina Switch Tronic. Its maximum power is provided at 4,000 rpm, while maximum torque is available between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 4.6 seconds, compared to the 5.5 seconds of 430D Coupe model, and maximum speed increased to 278 km / h, compared with the Coupe 430D's electronically limited 250 km / h. For the convertible version, the 0 to 100 km / h time is 5.0 seconds, and top speed is 275 km / h, impressive numbers for what is the first convertible equipped with a diesel engine in the history of Alpina.

Despite outstanding performances announced by the new engines, the Alpina D4 Twin-Turbo Coupe announces a combined fuel consumption of 5.3 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 139 grams per kilometer, while the Cabriolet version has a combined consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 km, and CO2 emissions of 156 grams per kilometer.

The new Alpina D4 Twin-Turbo Cabriolet and D4 Twin-Turbo Coupe benefit from a sport exhaust system of stainless steel that has a special configuration done by Alpina together with Akrapovic.

The engine provides a unique sound for a diesel, regardless of where the tachometer needle points to. As usual, Alpina models have a modified chassis compared to their equivalents in BMW's range.

D4 Twin-Turbo enjoys 19-inch Alpina Classic wheels, an Alpina aerodynamic kit, and a wide range of features as standard equipment. Launching the new Alpina D4 Twin-Turbo Coupe and D4 Twin-Turbo Cabriolet will take place in March, at the Geneva Motor Show.

Alpina has over 50 years of history in regard to modifying BMW models. The production of Alpina models is made with the support of BMW and selling its creations is made under their own name, the Alpina being recognized by TUV as the automobile manufacturer, not as a tuner.
