All You Need to Know About the New Mini Countryman, Also Available as Plug-in Hybrid
|   Saturday, November 12, 2016
Bigger and more spacious, the second-generation Mini Countryman official debuted alongside an important premiere for the British brand: the first plug-in hybrid version with an electric range of 40 km.

The largest model in the portfolio of Mini Countryman has been redesigned from scratch, starting with the UKL module, dedicated to models with front-wheel drive or all wheels drive (ALL4 in the case of Mini, xDrive on the BMW) produced by BMW Group - shared with the X1, 2 Series Active, and Gran Tourer.

The new MINI Countryman is 20 centimeters longer compared with its predecessor and wider by about three centimeters. The wheelbase of the model was extended by 7.5 centimeters. This increase results in a significant expansion of space for five freestanding seats and a clear boost of the storage’s volume and versatility in luggage transport. The rear seats can be moved longitudinally up to 13 centimeters. The folding backrest is made with a 40:20:40 ratio. It also provides variable tilt angle. The boot volume is 450 liters and can be extended, if necessary, to a maximum of 1,309 liters. This represents a maximum growth of 220 liters compared to the previous model.

For the market launch two petrol engines and two diesel engines will be available, each equipped with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology:
• MINI Cooper Countryman: petrol engine with three cylinders, displacement: 1.5 liters, output: 100 kW / 136 hp, maximum torque: 220 Nm.
• MINI Cooper S Countryman: petrol engine, four-cylinder engine displacement: 2 liters, output: 141 kW / 192 hp, maximum torque: 280 Nm.
• MINI Cooper D Countryman: diesel, four-cylinder engine displacement: 2 liters, output: 110 kW / 150 hp, maximum torque: 330 Nm.
• MINI Cooper SD Countryman: diesel, four-cylinder engine displacement: 2 liters, output: 140 kW / 190 hp, maximum torque: 400 Nm.

It is also included the first MINI with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the brand's history:
• MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4: petrol engine with three cylinders, displacement: 1.5 liters, output 100 kW / 136 hp, synchronous electric motor rated at 65 kW / 88 hp, combined power system: 165 kW / 224 hp, torque system: 385 Nm.

The fuel consumption of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 calculated in the EU test cycle is 2.1 l / 100 km, while CO2 emissions are 49 g / km. The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds.

The lithium-ion battery is positioned in front of the electric motor under the rear seats. It consists of five modules, each comprising 16 battery cells. Also, the electric motor is produced at its plant in Dingolfing, BMW Group's competence center for eDrive technology. The high voltage battery has a capacity of 7.6 kWh. At a wallbox panel with a charge capacity of 3.6 kW, it can be fully charged in two hours and 15 minutes. Charging at household outlets lasts three hours and 15 minutes.
