Alfa Romeo: \"We will launch an SUV, cognate with the Jeep Cherokee, within three years\"
|   Friday, May 10, 2013
To make the Alfa Romeo a premium brand able to compete with the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi, Sergio Marchionne, head of the Fiat Group insists on a major extension of the range. We will see in the coming years a roadster developed with Mazda, and based on the MX-5, but also a medium sedan which will be able to duel with the 3 Series and A4.

However, Alfa Romeo also aims to take advantage of the growth of the SUV segment. Europe has become an attractive market for such vehicles.
Therefore, Alfa Romeo is not going to lose ground in the premium segment. The Italians are planning to launch such a crossover.

Damien Dally, head of brand Alfa Romeo United Kingdom, said: "There will certainly be an SUV in the next two or three years." He said that the Fiat Group's ownership of Jeep gives Alfa Romeo access to a "whole portfolio of technologies." The new SUV model is expected to share much with the new Jeep Cherokee that was unveiled at the 2013 New York motor show in March this year.

The new Cherokee platform is the same as the Dodge Dart and another product Alfa Romeo: the Giulietta. That makes it more likely to use for future Alfa Romeo crossover. It will also allow the use of a distinctive architecture, front-wheel drive or the all-wheel drive.

The SUV is expected in late 2015 or early 2016 if the development goes according to plan. The model will debut after the launch of roadster. It will also reach markets even beyond the Atlantic Ocean, in the United States. Here, Alfa Romeo is already preparing to bring 4C Sports.

Alfa Romeo is also due to launch a new Spider roadster in 2015. Alfa Romeo and Mazda have announced plans to collaborate on a new model and the new Spider will be closely related to the next Mazda MX-5.

Despite its shared origins, Dally says the new Spider will be "absolutely, 100 per cent an Alfa Romeo" and that it will allow them to sell an open-top model at a lower price than recent Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo's most recent SUV concept goes back a while, all the way to 2003 with the Kamal. Of course, it is quite unlikely that it will form the basis of the new SUV's design, but it can be said with a reasonable amount certainty that it may inform us of the general theme.

As far back as 2008, Alfa boss Luca de Meo considered that an SUV would be essential for its U.S. return. Over the next five years the rumors insisted on persisting, hinting that the second Alfa Romeo to be sold upon its U.S. relaunch would be this mysterious SUV.

Whether all this is true or not remains to be seen, but 2015 is not so far in the future, so all we have to do is keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
