Advice for Young Drivers: Choose These Cars with Low Insurance Ratings
|   Saturday, October 15, 2016
Young drivers between the ages of 17 and 24 know that trying to insure a car in the UK may cost as much or more than the car itself costs! There is a logical reason for that as you probably know, and that is because insurance actuaries determine cost on the amount of risk the insurance company will need to carry. It goes without saying that risk increases as experience decreases.

Young drivers may have passed their theory test with flying colours because of all the practice they got in with those mock driving theory tests on the">Toptests website, but that doesn’t give them the experience behind the wheel to reassure an insurance company that their inexperience won’t lead to an accident. If you are a young and inexperienced new driver in the UK, you might want to consider these cars with low insurance ratings.

What Exactly Are Low Ratings?
Before looking at a list of cars in the UK that carry low ratings, you may want to understand why it is important. When looking at pricing insurance, insurance actuaries are really looking at how safe that particular model has been on the road historically or is predicted to be based on several factors if the car is a new release.

In the UK, cars are rated between 1 and 50 with 1’s being the safest. Young drivers should look at the list found on the Money Supermarket website to see which cars are rated 1 or 2 if they are looking for the cheapest rates available to them. Here, then, are some of the cheapest cars to insure and why young drivers might want to consider buying one of these.

2016 Cars that Are Cheapest to Insure
Whilst none of these cars may be particularly appealing to you as a young driver, the insurance you would pay on a sportier car may be priced way out of your range. These cars are all deemed to be amongst the safest to drive in 2016 and why they should be considered first:
Groups 1 and 2
Hyundai i10
  • Renault Twingo
  • Dacia Sandero
  • Vauxhall Corsa
  • Kia Picanto
  • Skoda Citigo
  • Smart ForFour

  • Perhaps as a young driver you are looking for a car that has a little more appeal to the younger crowd but also safe enough to have affordable insurance. Check out the next level up:
    Groups 3 and 4
  • Smart ForTwo
  • Fiat Panda
  • Vauxhall Viva
  • MG 3
  • Dacia Logan MCV
  • Toyota Yaris
  • Vauxhall Adam
  • Hyundai i20

  • There are other cars that fall within this range but these are the most popular in insurance groups 3 and 4.

Even if these cars don’t exactly strike your fancy, you might want to opt for affordability as opposed to looking for a sporty car that will definitely attract attention, but not always the kind you want! If the car of your dreams is targeted as a ‘risk’ by insurers in the UK, then chances are you won’t get the insurance at a cost you can afford. There is time to get in the experience (and age) you need to get a sports model you’d love to own now. For now, settle for a car that is insurable within your price range. It’s the wisest move you can make.
