50 Years Since One Of The Most Important Models In Volvo's History Appeared - Volvo 144

In August 1966, or exactly 50 years ago, Volvo 144 debuted simultaneously in four locations - Gothenburg, Oslo, Copenhagen and Helsinki. With this model, the Swedish manufacturer entered a much larger market segment. Most importantly, however, the 144 was the first model from Volvo which surpassed 1 million units sold - in 8 years Volvo 144 was sold in over 1.25 million copies!

Volvo 144 was taller than the Amazon model, and weighed less, but was on the same price segment.
However, the model complied with safety rules, offered 4-5 seats and had an identical wheelbase with the Amazon model. With the 144 model, Volvo introduced a new nomenclature, where the first digit would be the series model, the second figure the number of cylinders, and the third figure the number of doors.

In 1967, the two-door version appears - Volvo 142, and in 1968 began sales for the 5-door version - Volvo 145.
Based on the Volvo 140, in 1969, the Volvo 164 was created, which shared many components, but had a 10 cm longer wheelbase and a hood long enough to adopt engines with six-cylinder in line, B30 series. In 1970, the Volvo 145 Express utility model appeared, characterized by a high roof from the middle pillars to the back.

The design of 142, 144 and 145 models was inspired by that of the Amazon, with a characteristic radiator grille, the vertical rear lights and pronounced doors line with a step in exactly the bottom of the window. The 140 series are characterized by simple Scandinavian design, which is adopted by the current models too.

The 140 Series had rigid bodywork and deformation zones, split steering column, while the board had a protection framework during collisions. Headrests, retractable seat belts, and a system which alerts the occupants to engage seat belts were all standard. The braking system had disc brakes on both axles, hydraulic dual-circuit, due to which the brakes were functioning even if one of the circuits fail. More than this, the special valves in the brake system did not allow the wheels to lock during intensive braking.

The Volvo 140 series models had a classic arrangement with the front-engine and rear-wheel drive. Initially, under the hood a gasoline engine was contained, B18 series, with a displacement of 1.8 liters, which delivered 75 hp or 96 hp (two carburetors). In 1969, a gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters (B20 series) appears which delivered 82 hp respectively, 100 hp, and by 1971, there were versions with electronic fuel injection, which delivered up to 120 hp.

When the production of the Volvo 142, 144 and 145 models ended in the summer of 1974 some 1,251,371 cars were produced. For this reason, this series of models helped the Volvo company become an internationally "player".

The history of the 140 series did not end then, however, being revived in the legendary model Volvo 240, which borrowed many components from 140 series, transforming into a model with a history of 19 years, and the most sold Volvo model of all time with 2.8 million copies produced.
