40 years of the BMW Vierzylinder
|   Thursday, August 01, 2013
BMW is a brand that needs no introduction in any way. The BMW Headquarters is a special building that celebrates 40 years of existence. Is an important association with BMW because this building symbolizes the four cylinder engines. This is actually the name that made history: BMW Vierzylinder.

BMW headquarters was inaugurated on May 18, 1973, and it quickly became one of the emblematic buildings of the city of Munich, the most important town in Bavaria.
This building consisting of four elements in the form of a suspended cylinder is the work of Dr. Karl Schwanzer, the project that made him famous.

In the cross section, the tower, proposed by Schawanzer resembles a four-leaf clover. Maximum height would be 99.5 meters, this being limited by the local authorities. This restriction is based on Frauenkirsche tower height, from the Bavarian capital, which measures 98.6 meters. Constrained by this, the architect designed a tower of 22 floors, of which 18 were dedicated offices and four were technical floors.

The office building has done his duty with flying colors, but age took its toll and, between 2004 - 2006, the four-cylinder went into an extensive program of modernization and refurbishment. The surfaces have been refurbished, and the 2,304 windows have been replaced. Today, in 2013, the building is fully functional and offers a modern working space for 1,500 employees of the BMW Group.

In the vicinity of the headquarters of BMW, the BMW Museum is one of the main attractions of the city Munich. Although BMW had a dedicated space exposure models since 1925, it was placed in the plant and it was not very popular and well known. But with the construction of the new headquarters a separate building dedicated to exhibits was inaugurated.

Next to the tower, a museum with the shape cups, was the second architectural attraction, in the buildings complex designed for BMW by Karl Schwanzer. The architect developed a framework inside from circular columns, ramps, gap filling, and apparently platforms suspended in the air. The relatively thin exterior concrete shell was inspired by the principle of the self body shell. The roof measures 40 meters in diameter. The museum was then extended in 2002 and in 2008 it was reopened to the public with a permanent collection of over 130 BMWs. The BMW Museum now has over 500,000 visitors a year.

Since 2007, BMW has been enriched with more complex structures. It was called the BMW Welt, meaning "The BMW World" in free translation. It is a building with a futuristic architecture. The BMW Welt is a kind of super showroom, a place where the BMW fan or customer can interact with any element from the BMW world. Immediately after opening, The BMW Welt has become more popular than the BMW Museum across the street. Over two million visitors annually pass the threshold of glass and metal structure to experience the Bavarian automotive world. Moreover, at The BMW Welt customers come to pick up their car ordered. For one who has ordered a BMW and checked out right at the factory for the delivery, that is the supreme experience.
