3 New Volvo Safety Systems In The Testing
|   Thursday, July 12, 2012
Safety is always the number one concern when it comes to cars, or at least it should be. For that reason Volvo is giving its best in that direction. Right now, 3 new systems are undergoing tests. We are talking about autonomous driving, Intersection Support and animal detection.

Unfortunately, carmakers have little influence on how drivers behave behind the wheel and it seems that even authorities are having a very rough time convincing drivers to behave properly.
For that reason Volvo has decided to take another approach; if the driver can't adapt, then the car will have to.

The automaker claims that "surveys from three different research institutes in the United States reveal that modern drivers spend 25 to 30 percent of their time behind the wheel doing other things, such as focusing on mobile communication." The news techs under research will take that fact into account and make sure the driver is perfectly assisted at all times.

Thanks to using a radar and camera, future Volvos will be able to track and follow the car in front when the traffic is slow via an autonomous driving function. The engine, brakes and steering wheel will react automatically and in the same way as the car ahead of the Volvo does. This means that if the swerves, the Volvo too will "veer in the same direction."

Fredrik Lundholm, function developer at Volvo's Safety Functions department, tells Autoweek: "Driving in slow traffic is a monotonous and boring part of many drivers' everyday lives. Thanks to technology for autonomous driving, the car can help the driver comfortably and safely follow the vehicle in front."

Intersection Support is the next piece of tech under development. The system will apply the brakes automatically in certain types of emergencies. In the US alone, over 20 percent of all fatal accidents in 2007 occurred at an intersection. According to Volvo, the system "uses sensors to assess the entire traffic scenario."

The company uses the following example: "When the light turns green, one car after another turns left. Suddenly, an oncoming car drives through the red light and creates an immediate danger. In this situation, the turning car automatically brakes to avoid a collision. Intersection Support thus serves as a system that not only helps deal with the driver's own mistakes, but those of other road users, too."

The last system, animal detection, is an upgrade of the automaker's pedestrian detection system. A number of shapes and patters belonging to wild animals have been programmed into the system, so that when such an animal is encountered suddenly no serious damage will happen, or so it is hoped. Most such accidents happen at around 70 mph and the system can bring that down to 50 mph reducing risks but not eliminating them completely. Also, it hasn't been specified if the animal detection system works on domesticated animals too.

Test cars are on the road to collect as much data as possible. Look forward to see them in several years on showroom cars.
