2014 Volkswagen Golf Debts At The Paris Auto Show
|   Saturday, September 29, 2012
The redesigned Volkswagen Golf, made its debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, and is set to arrive in the United States as a 2014 model year. This new model is more spacious as well as having more fuel efficiency than previous models.

The most popular car in Europe has been completely redesigned and now resides on VW's new lightweight MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten, translation being Modular Transverse Matrix) architecture. This innovation will also give birth to a lot of future Audi and Volkswagen models in the race for improved fuel economy.

Officials claim the 2014 Golf will be about 150 pounds lighter than the present model. The Golf R will surely hold very high standards, seeing that the present Golf R gets 256 horses from the 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder unit; 260 horsepower is expected in the next GTI.

Ulrich Riestenpatt, Executive Director of VW's R division: "The future is diesel and all-wheel-drive, so if there's an oil-burner under the hood, don't be surprised. Either way, power will get to all four wheels via six-speed manual or a dual-clutch DSG gearbox".

For that to be achieved, the 2014 Golf looses 220 pounds. Cylinder deactivation, a brake energy regeneration system, automatic stop/start engine technology, low rolling-resistance tires, as well as a coefficient of drag going as low as 0.27 cd, all contribute to a 23% fuel economy improvement for all the European models.

The present Golf has a fuel economy of 23 or 24 mpg in the city and 31 or 33 mpg on the highway, which is not all that great; nearly 40 mpg on the highway is expected to come out of the new version to make up for that.
The 2014 Golf remains in the middle of the compact class, with an overall length of 167.5 inches, about 2.2 inches longer than the previous generation. Also, the wheelbase is 2.3 inches longer, thus making way for more interior space, besides improving the crash structure.

The Europeans can also buy a version of the new Golf dubbed the BlueMotion, which Volkswagen claims is the most fuel efficient Golf to be produced. Fitted with a 1.6 liter turbo diesel with 4 cylinders, the Golf BlueMotion will only need to be refueled 15 times per year, taking into account the average number of miles driven in Europe.

The Germans have also said that a new turbocharged 1.8 liter with 4 cylinders unit is scheduled to phase out the hated 2.5 liter inline 5 cylinder engine, starting with the 2014 Jetta. A TDI Clean Diesel version is almost a certainty, and judging by the revealing of a production GTI Concept in Paris, a performance version of the Golf can also be expected in the future.
Immediately following a collision, in order to keep it from hitting other vehicles or pedestrians, the new 2014 Golf comes equipped with a new multi-collision braking feature. Moreover, a 5 inch touch screen radio comes as a standard feature, while an 8 inch display is included with the optional navigation system.

In the US, the 2014 Volkswagen Golf will arrive in showrooms sometime by the summer of next year.
