2014 Rolls Royce Wraith - First Drive Review
|   Tuesday, October 01, 2013
Rolls Royce had first used the Wraith nameplate back in 1930, for their luxury coupe. It is not just a coincidence that they have decided to carry on with this nameplate on its 2014 model. This is a nostalgic vehicle for Rolls and they plan on giving it that extra edge so that it turns out to be as special to customers as it is for the company.

The original Wraith featured a chassis engineered to perfection and even though today it stands for the same logic, current owners BMW have changed quite a few aspects of the original production car.
Even though this vehicle is strictly British, German engineering runs underneath its skin. Rolls Royce had their typical designing characteristics, although they are missing in the current generation. This is mainly due the various designing modifications which were made by its modern designers.

Rolls Royce for example does not have its own roofline on the current generation vehicles and these cars looks like they have borrowed their roof structure from Italian car makers. Rolls Royce is known for luxury, authenticity, style, class and comfort while performance is not one of their strong sides. This however is about to change with the introduction of a new generation of cars – namely 2014 Wraith.

Rolls Royce claims that their Wraith draws power from a twin turbo charged V12 engine displacing 624 BHP. This helps the car accelerate from 0 – 60 MPH within 4.3 seconds. Although these figures are not extreme considering performance car standards, although a Rolls Royce sporting such figures are truly surprising. This car is as refined and smooth as ever while the latest Naim sound system, keeps the ambience alive in its interior.

Wraith has better prospects in terms of performance than the Ghost although it is designed on a donated chassis based on the Ghost. A Chrysler 300 sports similar features as compared to this vehicle, although a Rolls Royce Wraith will hold special glory every time it makes a public appearance. Driving this car is actually fun as handling has been improved, it does not feel like an SUV anymore while bringing out the thrill and joy of driving.

However, smooth drive experience is short lived as once you begin accelerating with this car you realize that this is actually a very blunt boat. Despite its BMW heritage, Wraith's chassis is disappointing as it is built for style and comfort, not speed. Front and rear multilink suspensions have been added although they cannot change the general feel of this car. Electronic controls have been added to this vehicle and they perform their basic tasks efficiently.

Anti roll bars are automatically adjusted to provide a stern performance while Rolls Royce is offering larger customizable rims with the Wraith. Level of personalization has been kept in check and this helps give the car an authentic feel. We expect Rolls Royce to bring the 2014 Wraith in showrooms by year end although it is yet to be confirmed. We surely hope Rolls Royce will do something about this sloppy handling in future models.
