2014 Mini Cooper and Cooper S Taken for a Spin on Road
|   Saturday, February 08, 2014
The quickest and fastest production vehicle from Mini is officially on the roads now. So we decided to go ahead and test their third generation Cooper and Cooper S models, to gain better insight into what the 2014 model is all about. While the Cooper uses a three cylinder engine layout, its S variant consists of an extra cylinder for additional power displacement. This range is much advanced than its predecessor, which in turn ensures greater power displacement and fuel economy than before.

Mini Cooper S is powered by a twin turbo charged 2.0 liter direct fuel injected petrol engine, which is the biggest from Mini at this moment. It is 0.4 liter larger than its predecessor, while being 7kg lighter simultaneously. Power displacement is said to be 189 BHP, while a sharp increase in torque is recorded.

This is turn makes this vehicle quick off the mark even as Mini claims a top speed of 146 MPH, while accelerating from 0 – 60 MPH within 4.6 seconds. This is quick even by sports standards and we must acknowledge Mini's engineering prowess. The best part about Mini's new lineup is weight reduction, which in turn induces a sense of urgency and balance into these vehicles.

An all new six speed manual transmission system has also been added which ensures smooth power delivery and displacement. Smaller ratios also ensure quick shifts, which increases acceleration. This is however a little stressful for urban use although large fifth and sixth gears ensure smoother run on longer stretches. Exterior modification gives both vehicles a beefed up appeal, while an overall aggressive stance makes it a hot pick for youngsters.

The Cooper S is distinguished from base variants owing to its reworked exterior, primary among which is their 16 inch optional sports rim. Special care has been taken while working on interior trim settings. Leather upholstery, complete with an intricate leather wrapped steering wheel, upholds the integrity of its interior. Base prices start at £18,650, making these vehicles affordable and hugely desirable.

These vehicles uphold their predecessor's reputation of being practical, yet sporty machines. Earlier generation Minis were actually used for sporting events in Europe, although later on they started acquiring luxury components and excess weight, which diminished their sports potential. Times are however changing and we are hopeful of Mini returning to its original roots. Driving these vehicles on road provides a sense of freedom, which went missing in Mini over time.

We are happy with current variants of both the Cooper and S and love what Mini has done to it. Certain areas such as drive dynamics, has been improved greatly. Hence, driving this vehicle on straights as well as around corners is easier than before. Weighing an approximately 1160 kg, body roll is missing, while its lowered suspension ensures confidence while driving. We need to take this vehicle for a day on the tracks and will get back to you with the results soon. Stay tuned for latest updates, news and drive test reviews.
