2014 Geneva Auto Show: The Volkswagen T-ROC Compact SUV Concept
|   Tuesday, March 04, 2014
The Volkswagen T-Roc Concept represents the future design direction of the small SUV class the German house is thinking of taking. The series model will be released in 2017 and will be based on a shortened version of the MQB modular platform.

Among all the concepts of an SUV presented by Volkswagen, the T-Roc is one that is not designed for production in this form. It is just a design study that tries several hypotheses before they reach the production line.

The T-Roc will complete the versatile product lineup under the Volkswagen name, becoming the fifth SUV brand, and will be positioned between the Taigun and Tiguan as a direct competitor for the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008. So far, the Volkswagen SUV range will include, in order of size, the new models Taigun, T-Roc (not final name), Tiguan, Touareg and Crossblue.

The T-Roc concept successfully masks its external dimensions, not at all generous, with a luscious mix of sportiness and sturdiness. A massive front grille merges with circular lights, fully LED, emphasizing the impression of breadth, an aesthetic detail that is to be grafted on the model series.

The retractable roof transforms the T-Roc concept into a crossover stretcher. The idea, anticipated since last year by its prototype brother, Audi Q1, gives pointers on VW's determination to introduce life-style declination of the new city SUV to series production.

With a length of 4179 mm, a width of 1,831 mm and a height of 1,501 mm, the Volkswagen Concept T-Roc is 246 mm shorter, 23 mm wider and 199 mm shorter than the current Tiguan, the weight of the model series is estimated at less than 1420 kg, 25 kg less than its direct rival, Nissan Juke.

The wheelbase is 10 mm shorter than the Tiguan's, it bears 19 inch wheels and a MacPherson suspension on the front side and a multilink on the rear side. The propulsion is provided by the latest evolution of the 2-liter TDI common rail diesel capable to develop 184 hp and ensure a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds. The model has a maximum speed of 210 km / h, and boasts an average fuel consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 129 grams per kilometer.

The interior of the Volkswagen T-Roc has not yet been revealed, but the Germans had a few sketches which show the main features. The SUV has four seats, a 12.3 inch display in place of the traditional instrument panel clocks, and the infotainment system is based on a tablet mounted on the center console.

The non-permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive transmits torque (50-50 ratio between the two axles), but normally only the front wheels are active.

The driver has three distinct settings regarding driving options: Street, Snow and Off-road. He can also monitor the car's vicinity by using images taken by integrated cameras in the headlights and mirror images.

The series model, expected in 2017, will be made in Spain, together with the new Audi Q1 and Q3.
