2014 Dakar Rally - Endurance Test In The Atacama Desert And Andes Mountains, With 2 Renault Dusters
|   Friday, January 10, 2014
The Dakar Rally is one of the most representative competitions in the motorsport world, primarily due to the specific endurance lasting about two weeks and the difficult route through the desert.
After it got the name due to the fact that the final destination was Dakar, Senegal's state capital, the famous competition took refuge in 2009 to South America as a result of the terrorist threat that led to the cancellation of the 2008 edition.

A part of the lost charm of the Sahara Desert has been regained instead in the Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains, which crosses all three countries in which competition will take place this year: Argentina, Chile and for the first time, Bolivia.

The Dakar Rally 2014 begun on January 5, in the town Rosario from Argentina, located in the north-east of the country, several hundred kilometers from the border with Uruguay.

After a day of rest, on January 11, the competitors will arrive the next day in the town of Uyuni from Bolivia; following that, on January 13, they will enter the territory of Chile. From here, they will follow a southward course through the Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains, the arrival point of the rally being the Chilean town of Valparaiso. In total, the rally includes 13 special stages carried out over a total distance of 9374 kilometers (in the case of self class), of which 5522 km under clock.

Undoubtedly, the main favorite to win at the motor class is Stephane Peterhansel. The 48 years old Frenchman triumphed in the last two years and achieved a record of 11 wins in the Dakar Rally (six motorcycle class, five motor class).

He will compete this year for the Monster Energy X-Raid team, driving a Mini All4Racing, and has a chance to equal the record of three consecutive wins held by Ari Vatanen and Jean-Pierre Lartigue.

Like last year, the subsidiary from Argentina of the French manufacturer Renault has its own team in the Dakar Rally. Named Renault Duster Dakar Team, the team will compete with two Duster counterparts, under the Renault logo, and will align at the start with Emiliano Spataro and Jose Garcia.

Both machines are equipped with a V6 engine, a 3.5-liter unit capable of generating 350 hp.
The stated objective of the Dakar Rally team is to rank in the top 15 in the overall standings and Spataro believes they can achieve such a performance.

Although the Dakar Rally reached its 36th edition, 2014 is the first year in which on the list of participants Ford appears. The American manufacturer is not officially present, but its subsidiary from South Africa is, which provided two counterparts of the Ford Racing Ranger T1 for Lucio Alvarez and Chris Wisser.

Another exotic presence will be Chinese manufacturer, the Great Wall, which provided two Haval H8units to those from Red Bull SMG Rally Team. The Chinese have started in the Dakar Rally last year and have managed to impress after they finished sixth place in the overall standings.
