2013 Nissan Altima: Mid-Size Sedan With 31 MPG On A Combined Cycle
|   Sunday, May 27, 2012
The highly successful mid-sized sedan form Nissan has arrived bearing the 2013 mold year. The latest generation promises to improve on all the strong points its predecessors had. Here, we will take a look at an aspect that steadily, yet surely, is starting to overshadow almost everything else: gas mileage.

For a car its size, it is expected the fuel economy numbers will indicate 31 mpg on a combined cycle. When the official EPA ratings come in, the car will become a top contender in its class.
Cars like the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion or the Chevrolet Malibu will have a strong foe to defeat. Naturally, the car will not compare to hybrid vehicles; it would be pointless. As a comparison, the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid is likely to get 47-48 mpg in the city. Cars like that are in their separate category.

If you would recall, the Altima came in a hybrid version too. The model was discontinued for this year, after gracing the market with its presence for 4 years. Rest assured, however, as a new Altima hybrid is set to arrive soon enough. An exact date is yet unknown, but it will have the Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), plus a supercharged version of its 4 cylinder engine.

Returning to the car at hand, we find the interior to be spacious and stylish, with a sleek design. The outer lines have something about them that makes you think an Infiniti is in front of you; a good thing obviously.
The V6 engine puts on a convincing case on making the Altima an equal to some sports cars. As you would expect that version is the one with the least impressive fuel economy ratings.

Higher fuel efficiency figures, 15 percent higher than outgoing models, have been reached due to Nissan's care with the transmission's efficiency, while tuning the engines to offer the best performances for as little fuel as possible. According to them, friction is reduced by 40 percent in the pulley-and-belt transmission system because 70 percent of it is brand new.

The 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine rated at 182 horses will deliver about 27 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway. Their claims of 15 percent better numbers are true in this case. As mentioned previously, its competitors in this segment achieve fuel ratings of 27-29 mpg on a combined cycle, as opposed to the 31 mpg the Altima can muster.

Another interesting and praise worthy action taken by Nissan is the keeping of the V6 model. The 270 horsepower developed by the 3.5 liter unit will surely attract a few customers now that Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia have given up on the larger engines. The expected ratings are close to 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, thus resulting in 25 mpg combined, up by 2 from the 2012 model year.

Clearly, things are becoming better and better; we can hardly wait for the hybrid to come.
