2013 Mercedes-Benz GL - a silent cruiser for families
|   Friday, June 21, 2013
Mercedes-Benz GL is a car that is specifically labeled as a car built in America for Americans. This 4x4 giant is built at Mercedes-Benz's plant located in Alabama and may be it is a bit smaller than US standards but is actually bigger than a Range Rover from every dimension except the width.

It is a second generation model with a considerable variation from its predecessor. On first look this 4x4 seems like a renewed version but the body is newly designed with more efficient engines inside and the overall weight has also been reduced to 90kg from the previous model and on the bottom the car has similar body to the modern M-class series.
The smart choice for a conventional usage is the GL 350 Bluetec AMG Sport which is diesel-powered, while the sporty choice with a twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine is GL 63 AMG. Fuel consumption has been reduced to 24% from its previous models while CO2 emission has also been trimmed down to 13% which stands at 37.7mpg and 209g/km respectively.

The automatic gearbox of Mercedes-Benz GL is 7-speed and is almost discreet but can abrupt at swift speeds but the performance hits the nail on the head as a 0-62mph speed is gained within 8 seconds. The refinement is exceptional as Mercedes' six-cylinder engines are among the smoothest and most unobtrusive ones around. The noises of wind and road are also kept to a minimum therefore the 4x4 is a silent SUV. Hence, the GL provides its passengers a smoother and quieter road experience.

As mentioned above about the weight loss of 90kg, the GL still weighs 2455kg which is nearly 300kg more than a conventional Range Rover, but once you are on the driving seat the GL astonishingly performs well with very light steering. However, the quality of the ride in this 4x4 is not as expected, so anyone thinking about a bump-free progress will get disappointment because the ride is firm. Pretty much similar is the case with the interiors, which are not that impressive. The Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne are the ones with more glamorous cabins than the GL. It doesn't give its passengers the feel of Mercedes's trade mark classy interior. However, the sitting room is spacious in every seat from the front row to the rear panel with plenty of legroom. The seats are electric folding so there is no need to strain out by moving them in and out all the time and even in seven-seat mode there is enormous space for a decent amount of luggage.

The running costs will be on the higher side and as per the official figures the GL emits more carbon dioxide and consumes a fraction more fuel than the equivalent Range Rover. But this is not a major factor for most of its buyers. Therefore, The Mercedes-Benz GL is a newly designed, silent cruiser for families, but there are other far more classier and far cheaper options available in the market of 4x4 vehicles.
