2013 Hyundai Elantra: Safer But Lower MPG Indicator?
|   Sunday, June 10, 2012
When the 2011 Hyundai Elantra came to the US, it scored big time. It had everything behind to justify its strong sales: good advertisement and positive reviews. The public honored the Korean company's efforts by awarding the car the 2012 North American Car of the Year Trophy. It beat the Ford Focus and the VW Passat, but it still had rough edges.

The first model years received only 3 stars from the NHTSA as far as frontal impacts are concerned and 4 stars overall.
This department has been upgraded in the 2013 model year. The overall rating has gone up to 5 stars with frontal impact receiving 4 stars. If anyone felt threatened by the lack of safety, that reason has disappeared.

The improvement is due to the changed design in the side-curtain and front passenger airbags. Now, the airbags inflate more efficiently, a fact the NHTSA has recognized.

At this point, the Elantra is among the tops dogs in the compact class, battling it out with the Chevrolet Cruze. However, there are threats looming at the horizon, threats that might damage the centerpiece of Elantra's marketing campaign; the 40 mpg rating is in danger of dropping.

Of course, it is still too early for a definitive answer to that, but the car's image might suffer regardless. The 40 mpg is something of a magic number in the auto industry and not many vehicles can claim to reach it, at least not without the help of special or editions or packs. Hyundai has seized this opportunity and vigorously advertised that strong point; the Elantra has no asterisk to show.

Well, this type of campaigning is not unheard of, but in Elantra's case there was little competition could dispute, as the car lived up to its promises. The new Elantra Coupe and the coming Elantra GT have the potential to finally give adversaries something to grab hold of. This might be the occasion needed to put an asterisk at the end of Elantra's mpg indicator.

For the 2013 model year, EPA has maintained the 29/40 mpg for the sedan. Those numbers are valid regardless of what transmission is fitted on the car. The Coupe version shoes the same number when the manual gearbox is in place, but the automatic one takes 1 mpg from both figures. It can be expected that the Elantra GT will also fall short of the 40 mpg threshold if conditions are right enough.

Now rumors indicate that an Elantra Blue edition is on the way, and the EPA listings seem to confirm that. Ever since the car was first launched it has been speculated whether or not the Blue edition will arrive along with its 30/40 mpg. The required efficiency levels may come from an implemented start-stop system. It certainly has the potential to deliver 1 extra mile, and Hyundai has confirmed in the past that it is experimenting with this type of tech. However, even if that is true there is no confirmation that that tech will arrive in the US, therefore, the wait is not over yet.
