2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid: 47 MPG In All EPA Tests
|   Friday, September 21, 2012
The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid was designated the most efficient hybrid, having a fuel consumption of 47 mpg in the city,47 mpg on the highway and, obviously, 47 mpg combined. At the same time, the 2013 Ford Fusion already has top EPA grades for gas only power (thanks to an EcoBoost engine delivering 37 mpg highway).

So, now the American manufacturer is waiting for the official figures for the Ford Fusion Energi, a car with plug-in hybrid capabilities and an expected 100 mpg rating; we'll see what EPA has to say.
These are all actions that are part of Ford's efforts of satisfying more customers. Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas elaborates: "Ford is bringing power of choice to midsize sedan buyers. More than 2 million customers this year will purchase midsize cars. Our new Fusion delivers the fuel savings people truly want and value, with technologies that cost two to three times the price on some German sedans."

There are some important underlying stories here that go even beyond EPA's verdict on the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid. First of all, we have the apparently successful efforts done by Ford to bring its hybrid technology to people's houses, as well as have it up to date. Therefore, the Blue Oval is currently performing a good deal of its high efficiency heavy lifting at its facilities based in the US, from which an early result was the new lithium ion battery pack used in the 2013 Fusion Hybrid. They have a few advantages, like being less expensive, lighter and overall more effective than batteries that use older chemistry, like the nickel metal hydride ones found in the Toyota Camry Hybrid. These batteries are combined in the Fusion with the new 2.0 liter Atkinson-cycle I4 engine, a unit that is also lighter and brings more efficiency to the family than the engine the 2012 Fusion Hybrid has.

Thanks to these advances we have reached the second notable trend Ford's green vehicles have been displaying: a tireless emphasis on going beyond just having the best-in-class fuel-economy ratings in general, and the strong urge of beating Japan's Toyota. For instance, the upcoming launch of the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid multi-purpose vehicle is being flanked by an army of reminders that it's more powerful, affordable, and spacious, not to mention more efficient than the Toyota Prius V.

This is where the freshly redesigned Fusion Hybrid come in with almost all of the above mentioned benefits, except one: the Toyota Camry Hybrid's price has a starting point which is a about 1,200 dollars lower than the one on the new Fusion.

Alan Mulally, Ford's president and CEO stated: "The new Fusion is part of our plan to offer vehicles with the very best quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value. We are absolutely committed to class-leading fuel efficiency as a reason to buy Ford vehicles, with customers able to choose the fuel-efficient powertrain that best fits their lifestyle."
