2013 Detroit Auto Show: Volvo plans on launching the V40 Cross Country
|   Wednesday, January 09, 2013
Volvo is planning on showcasing the V40 Cross Country at the Detroit Auto Show in 2013 and the top of the line T5 petrol engine is available as a two wheel drive. Priced at £33,975, the T5 sports a turbo charged petrol engine displacing 247 BHP and is vastly different from the standard V40. The suspension of the Cross Country has been increased and this gives the vehicle an advantage over the standard V40.

This vehicle is a soft roader and although it is available with side skirts, raised suspension, engine upgrade etc.
The V40 Cross Country can venture off road into the soft muddy terrain when the driver runs out of asphalt to drive on. The V40 Cross Country actually enjoys the off road experience and Volvo has successfully designed this vehicle. Quality wise the Cross Country is everything that of a V40 with extra features.

The two wheel drive Cross Country package is available for an extra £1000. And this vehicle features an increase in ride height by 40 mm and a stronger looking exterior. The Cross Country has additional roof rail kits, lower intake vent on the front bumper rear bumper with attached skid plates, plastiminum extensions and LED Daytime Running Lights. The interior is more robust than the standard V40 and the upholstery is completely altered.

The interior reminds people of the larger V70 Cross Country of the 1990s, although both the vehicles share nothing in common apart from the Cross Country tag. The V70 Cross Country was a vastly robust vehicle as compared to the V40 Cross Country and therefore to reduce the disappointment it would be better to consider the V40 Cross Country to be just a face lifted version of the V40.

However, the positive aspects of the V40 Cross Country include the fact that the new suspension setting is better suited to the semi off road terrains that are present in the English countryside where this vehicle is ultimately headed. The overall ride quality is quite smooth, although things may get a little bumpy on certain occasions.

The overall ergonomics has been well maintained and the chassis is quite strong and the vehicle highly powerful. Steering has a strange preciseness to it and driving this vehicle is actually not as difficult off road as people would have considered. This is in fact better than usual Volvo standards and the engineers need to be commended for this job.

Overall, the Volvo V40 Cross Country is quite impressive and fun to drive, both on and off road and although it sports a very powerful engine, the cabin is not noisy once the music system is switched on. However, people cannot expect this vehicle to be as restful as the Volkswagen Golf.
However, it is quite close to matching the refinement level of the Golf. At £1000, upgrading the V40 to the V40 Cross Country is a good deal and people planning on using their vehicle for the off road experiences should definitely go forward with the upgrade.
