2013 Detroit Auto Show: Expect The 2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet
|   Sunday, January 06, 2013
The highly awaited 2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet will make its debut in North America at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show later this month, and actual sale will begin this spring. As the name clearly states, this is the convertible version of the RS 5. Basically, we get the same things as that car brought with the addition of the sense of freedom not having a roof over your head holds.

Inspired by the A5 Cabriolet, the RS 5 paid a visit to the Audi quattro GmbH, the company's go-fast division.
The result of that visit is the presence of a mighty V8 engine. Some words about it: the engine displaces 4.2 liters and is capable of delivering some 450 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The impressive horse count is available at 8250 rpm while the torque figure is made ready between 4000 and 6000 rpm.

The engine is paired with a 7 speed dual clutch transmission delivering power to all 4 wheels. The traditional Quattro AWD comes with a compact and lightweight crown-gear center differential which can control the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles swiftly and over a wide range. That means that up to 70 percent of toque can be directed to the front and up to 85 percent to the rear, as the driver deems necessary. The default setting is 40:60 front-rear.

Besides the crown-gear differential, there is another toque vectoring system acting on all wheels. If the load on one wheel is reduced too much, the brakes are automatically applied before the wheel can begin to slip. Optionally, Audi can fit the car with a sport differential. With it, the power between the rear wheels can be actively distributed.

There is a downside to this however: increased weight. The Audi RS 5 Cabriolet stands at around 4400 lbs. But even the extra lbs cannot stop the car from going from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, while the top speed is capped at 174 mph.

Seeing how the government still upholds the gas guzzler tax, it will come to pleasantly surprise potential buyers that this car will evade it. Audi claims the car will deliver 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined.

To up the car's rigidity special reinforcements have been used, their weight partially compensated by the aluminum front fenders.

The folding mechanism of the roof is a simple one, in order to save as much weight as possible. The roof can be lowered in 15 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 31 mph. It covers a nice interior with space for 4 people. Inside, we have standard sport seats up front with power adjustments, high side panels for optimal lateral support, a lumbar support and integrated head restraints, as well as a pull-out thigh support. Furthermore, a combination of leather and Alcantara, or optionally, black or lunar silver Fine Nappa leather can be used for upholstery.
Expect the price range to go over 70000 dollars.
