2013 Detroit Auto Show: 2014 Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe And Cabriolet Preview
|   Sunday, January 06, 2013
Having survived yet another apocalypse, we turn our attention to the 2013 Detroit Auto Show where Mercedes promises us some good things, like the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe and Cabriolet. This news comes after we have been shown the 2014 E Class Sedan and Wagon and it can only gladden buyers.

Now, the latest additions have some similarities with the sedan and wagon, but have their own distinct personalities. How well will they fare will be seen in the summer when the cars enter showrooms.
We don't have too much to wait, but still…

On to the cars themselves. Powering the vehicles, we find some interesting choices. For the E350 models, we have the 3.5 liter V6 engine rated at 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The E550 get the V8 engine displacing 4.6 liters, fitted with turbochargers and developing some 402 horses and 443 lb-ft of torque.

Rear wheel drive will be standard for both the coupe and cabriolet, however, the E350 coupe will be available with optional AWD. The transmission is standard for both models, a 7 speed auto gearbox with DIRECT SELECT (Mercedes wants it to be spelled that way) console-mounted shifter and steering wheel-mounted paddles.

According to the automaker, the newest edition of its 7 speed automatic transmission improves efficiency as well as eases maintenance. We don't know exactly how that is possible, we have to take their word for it. An interesting features is the M mode which allows you to command an upshift or downshift on the fly, with the transmission automatically going back to automatic mode after a short period.

The 2014 E Class Coupe and Cabriolet arrive with standard Agility Control suspension coupled with selective damping, which adapts to the road surface in order to improve the ride-handling balance. An Agility Control sports suspension is likewise available for those with a taste for crisper responses. Lastly, the Advanced Agility package ups the stakes with electronic damping control and sportier accelerator and transmission maps.

Furthermore, electromechanical steering is also standard. The system is speed-sensitive in its assistance and variable in ratio throughout the range. Mercedes says that this feature results in more direct steering response and increased comfort. Plus it saves a few percentages in fuel efficiency, when the Active Parking Assist feature is enabled.

Inside, we find 7-inch high-res display for the COMAND infotainment system, a standard feature which contains radio features, plus an in-dash DVD/CD player, a memory card slot, auxiliary input, plus Bluetooth hands-free calling.

As far as safety features go, the cars get the Collision Prevention Assist and Attention Assist as standard equipment, plus optional extras like the Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, Pre-Safe Brake with pedestrian detection, Pre-Safe Plus, Active Lane Keeping Assist, BAS Plus with Intersection Assist, and a 360-degree camera system.

The cabriolet comes with the optional AIRSCARF system, sending heated air to the passengers when driving open-topped in colder weather happens. Redesigned interiors and exteriors can also be expected.

We will learn more about that when the 2013 Detroit Auto Show kicks off.
