2012 Paris Auto Show: The BMW Concept Active Tourer
|   Saturday, September 15, 2012
Soon enough, in just 2 weeks, the French automobile might will be unleashed at the Paris Auto Show. There we will be able to see some of the world's classiest car models, destined for production or not. Sure enough car lovers will have a great time during that time. However, due to manufacturers' grace, the mortal population is able to enjoy a good deal of previews of what is to come. This time is BMW's turn.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer may be called a concept car, but from the looks of it, it may well see the assembly line in a year or two.
This front wheel drive vehicle is set in motion with the help of a 1.5 liter turbocharged 3 cylinder engine. Furthermore, it seems the model is actually a plug-in hybrid. Thus, we have even more proof to convince us of the direction the future is going, if anyone still needed convincing of course.

Now, that hybrid setup will generate about 190 horses, which are reasonable enough to propel the car to 62 mph in 8 seconds. The top speed is capped at double that figure, 124 mph. However, the really impressive number is the 94 mpg fuel economy indicator. If it is true then we have a genuine winner on our hands. Unfortunately, we do not know if that number will ever be reality.

Regardless of that fact, the Active Tourer is supposed to travel 18 miles on electricity alone thanks to the juice stored in its battery pack. When power is drain completely, the traditional engine takes over; it also doubles as a regenerator for the batteries.

Overall, we have an attempt to make a car measuring 171 inches in length, 72 inches in width, and 61 inches in height, have as much space as possible. While obviously larger than a subcompact, it is nevertheless smaller than what luxury standards demand. Compared to the 1 Series, it is only slightly wiser and taller, and has the same length. In that space we has 4 doors, a hybrid drivetrain plus a cargo area.

From the outside, a viewer can see anything from a classy hatchback to an impressive crossover. The nose is just like any other modern BMW: angled slats in the kidney grille, plus aggressive headlights, and a three-part lower air dam. On the sides, the styling is crisp and effective, managing to take some of the bulk out of the tall and short shape. In the back, things are kept simple, but the exhaust outlets encased in the rear bumper have an attractive and modern look. The side mirrors are cool and one of the few items on the outside along with the wheels that look like concept grade elements.

On the inside, we have a SF environment: neon glow delivered by a light pipe going all around the cabin, the steering column is quite long and stands out from the rest of the dash, while the driver instrument cluster seems to be taken from a motorcycle; some of the materials used will never make to production, like the open-pore laminated wood, milled from a single block.
