2012 Paris Auto Show: Preview Of The 2013 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet
|   Sunday, September 09, 2012
This month's Paris Auto Show will see the presentation of the new Audi RS 5 Cabriolet. Until then we have this to share with you.

The drivetrain is the same one we have on the RS 5 Coupe, with power developed by a naturally-aspirated 4.2 liter V8 engine developing 450 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Drive is channeled to the standard quattro AWD system thanks to a 7 speed Stronic dual-clutch transmission, wich by the way is the only gearbox available on the RS 5 line.

The quattro AWD system features a compact and lightweight crown-gear center differential whic can vary the torque distribution between the front and rear axles fast and over a wide range of up to 70 percent for the front and up to 85 percent in the back. The default setting is 40:60 front to rear.
Even so, on its most powerful setting the new RS 5 Cabriolet will go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

That's slightly behind the coupe version's 4.5 seconds, but we have to consider the convertible's slightly increased weight due to the extra strengthening of the body a missing roof normally requires. According to Audi, each of the model's 450 hoses pulls about 9.41 lbs. The top speed is capped at 174 mph, meaning it is the same as the coupe.

Another feature is the Audi drive select option, which allows the driver to alter the characteristics of the electric power steering, the 7 speed Stronic dual-clutch gearbox, throttle valves, or even the exhaust system sound flaps. The driver can select from 4 different modes: comfort, auto and dynamic. Vehicles equipped with Audi's MMI navigation plus system, have an extra mode, "individual," which allows for custom settings.

Audi drive select also lets the user tamper with the suspension settings. In the RS 5 Cabriolet, every pair of diagonally opposing shock absorbers is interconnected with hydraulic oil lines and a central valve. This means that when cornering at speed, the system will increase support of the spring-deflected front wheel at the outside of the curve. Audi drive select permits its user to adjust the severity of the system, offering him 3 choices.

Ventilated steel discs come as standard brakes, with the lighter carbon ceramic units coming as an option. They are housed by 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, which are also standard, with 20-inch units optional.
For luxury amenities, we have a parking assistant, heated seats, three-zone climate control, plus a range of infotainment features. At the peak of it all, there is the MMI navigation plus, which has a large hard drive, a DVD drive plus a 7-inch color monitor. Choose Audi connect and the vehicle also becomes an Internet hotspot.

Other options include a carbon design package for the dash and surrounding areas, plus a wide selection of safety warning systems, as well as a Bang & Olufsen stereo system.
The first of the 2013 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet sales will begin in Europe early next year.
