2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed: Porsche 918 Spyder Concept
|   Saturday, June 30, 2012
On the 28th of June, the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed started. A lot of interesting sights will be available; among them we have the highly anticipated Porsche 918 Spyder Concept. Porsche will clearly take the spotlight with this model. After all, it has been a while since we got anything new on this car.

Back in 2010, at the Geneva Auto Show, the 918 Spyder was unveiled and it caused massive excitement. What's more, soon after the car was confirmed for production.
That was when enthusiasm levels knew no margins.

The 918 Spyder will go back in time and serve as the spiritual successor to the Porsche 917 race cars of the 1970s, which we all know how much were loved. However, that does not mean that it won't take inspiration from modern day models. The car will draw heavily from the 917s of old, but elements from cars like the RS Spyder will also be found here.

Having said that, the 918 Spyder will be a walking (or driving?) showcase of new tech from Porsche. Thanks to it we get to steal a glimpse of what the future holds for us from this company.

Now, it was believed that the 3.4 liter V8 engine will play the role of the traditional drive in the hybrid system, but we know now that the production version will use a bigger unit instead. The new 4.6 liter V8 will be the main driving force behind the car, thanks to its 570 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid system would not be complete without the pair of electric motors, which bring the horsepower count near 770. More precise numbers are bound to show up as the launching date draws nearer.

Performance levels are expected to be very high. The German automaker predicts 3 seconds will be needed to go from 0 to 60 mph. The top speed when all drives are engaged is aid to be in excess of 200 mph. However, the best part is the predicted fuel efficiency level. Supposedly, 78 mpg is not a far-fetched number. Imagine that! A supercar in its own right that is not overly thirsty. If they manage to pull that one off, all sports cars manufacturers must grovel before the might of Porsche.

The production version will also get a manual roof system with removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment, unlike the concept. On the other hand, both versions will sport two seats and the latest in Porsche interior design elements.

One bit of bad news, only for those who prefer a right-hand wheel, is that Porsche will only be making the car with the wheel on the left side. Maybe it is just a fad, or maybe it hints at a few of the technological problems they had to surmount in order to fit so much tech in a compact and lightweight body, or maybe both versions.

Production of the 918 Spyder will kick off next year on the 18th of September. If you feel the urge to buy one now, know that the starting price is 845,000 dollars. If you have that much money to spare then you would better hurry, as the car will only be made in 918 pieces.
