Toyota has officially unveiled the new Hilux generation in synchronized events in Australia and Thailand, two of the most important markets for the Japanese pick-up. In a career spanning back 47 years, the Hilux checks a new generation, ready to get on the streets this fall.

Hilux is one of the most important models produced by Toyota, selling over 16 million copies during its considerable lifetime (the first model was released in 1968) and is present in over 180 countries.

The legendary pickup of the Japanese reached its eighth generation, on which occasion it received some significant changes. As was expected, the Hilux has been redesigned and now has a design philosophy aligned with other models in the range. So, the front side benefits from an imposing chrome grille, the headlights are slightly more angular and it now has LED lights for daytime running. The aesthetic package is complemented by LED taillights, a muscular profile and rim sizes between 16 and 18 inches.

In terms of size, the Hilux increased by 70 mm in length, 40 mm in width but lowered the roofline. Even the tank capacity has increased to 80 liters.
At a structural level the new Hilux has received enhancements, with the chassis being now a little more rigid to ensure exemplary behavior at impact tests. The impact tests are where Toyota hopes to pass with five stars, given that the new Hilux offers as standard equipment traction and stability control, ABS, reverse camera, seven airbags, hill start assist and warning emergency brake.

The chassis and suspension are new, the latter benefiting from improved shock absorbers and leaf springs in the rear. The car can be ordered with three different types of suspension: standard, heavy duty (high load) or comfort (for use primarily on asphalt).

At launch, Toyota has announced four engines for the new Hilux, two petrol and two diesels. If the petrol unit is unlikely to be seen in Europe, the diesel one will surely be encountered.

The 3.0-liter diesel engine was replaced by a 2.8-liter unit, capable of developing 174 horsepower and a generous torque of 450 Nm, available from a rev range between 1600 rpm and 2400 rpm. Although the torque increased by 25 percent, fuel consumption decreased by 10 percent.

Also revised was the and 2.4-liter diesel engine which now develops 147 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque over a rev range between 1600 rpm and 2000 rpm. This engine will be preferred for versions equipped with 4x2 traction.

These two engines will be attached to a manual transmission or an automatic one, both with six reports. Thanks to these configurations, the new Hilux will be pulling up to 3,500 kilograms and can carry in on it as much as 1,240 kilograms.

With the new generation, the interior was better insulated against noise and vibration. Also, the diesel engines promise to be a bit quieter. In addition to more generous space in both types of cabin (single or double), the Hilux promises a number of important features for passenger comfort like air conditioning, electric windows, color trip computer, touch screen multimedia system, cruise control plus keyless entry.
