Honda Designed Sportscar With Motorcycle Engine
|   Friday, October 16, 2015
Honda presented a concept car that promises a feeling of freedom that only motorbikes have. The Honda Project 2 & 4 is the winner of Global Design Project contest that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a testimony of Honda's experience in performance on two and four wheels. The connection with the moto world derives, among other things, from the use of the competition propeller RC213V modified to run on public roads and the innovative driving position.

The new concept celebrates both the creativity of Honda's engineers as well as the leadership position in terms of engine manufacturing worldwide in the automotive industry, motorcycles and ancillary equipment, plus the marine and aerospace areas. So, with a diverse portfolio Honda returns to the performance and passion arena after officially launching earlier this year two leading exponents in the field of sportiness (new Type R and the new NSX).

Honda Project 2 & 4 is an example of how the different specializations could work together. The concept is being developed by Moto Design Center in Asak, in collaboration with Car Design Center in Wako. This union of ideas led to a final result that manages to combine the stability and dynamics of a classic sports car with lightning fast reactions and the adrenaline typical to motorcycle racing. The structure concept is specifically designed to expose the many chassis elements, similar to a bare motorcycle, while the engine is centrally placed to get the center of gravity as low as possible.

Over 80 designers participated in Honda's in-house contest globally, and Project 2 & 4 is the winner of Team Honda's inspiring creativity and initiative in design. This year's contest was developed by Honda, as this kind of internal challenge is an annual event which takes on different forms, and by other car manufacturers too. This project aims to assess both the public response to new proposals for design, as well as designers practicing their creativity and the lines resulting often end up on the series model, even if not always on a car or motorcycle inspired directly from the exhibit.

Back to model at hand, the vehicle's dimensions are: 3,040 mm length, 1,820 mm width and 995 mm height. The total mass is equal to 405 kg.
The concept is equipped with a diesel engine used in MotoGP, the RC213V which is the race bike of Honda. The four-cylinder are arranged in a V, with a displacement of 1liter and it delivers over 215 hp at 13,000 rpm, and 118 Nm of torque at 10,500 rpm. It is mated to a dual-clutch box with six steps. Due to the low weight of only 405 kg, Project 2 & 4 should ensure an impressive performance, close to that of a street sport motorcycles.

The designers were inspired largely bythe Honda RA272 racing car, with which Richie Ginther won the Grand Prix Formula 1 in Mexico in 1965. However, the lines and main features of the model are modern and sporty. The designers' aim was to bring the driver as close to the road as possible to ensure the sensations lived by motorcyclists.
